So am I soft in the head ?

Featured Replies

Commented on a thread earlier when someone said anyone spending 30k on a 280 Superb must be soft in the head !

While I agreed I am probably soft in the head I disagree with them on the other point.

It's true the deprivation may well be brick like. It's also true that it will not be as economical as a Derv.

I also see motoring sites saying the Derv makes more sense....

But not for me.

It not always about economy.

As for mad spending 30k on a Skoda.... Why ?

What else could I get with similar performance and space for 30k ? I looked at all the competition. BMW, Mercedes, VW, Seat, Volvo etc etc.

But guess what ? I just preffered the look of the Superb. It's a great looking car.

Why not buy after a year and save a packet ? Well I just prefer to have a car from new.

I've also had this from friends.... 30k on a Skoda mate ! Hahah you're off your head ! You could get a ( whatever ) for that.

30k mate ! Lol it will be worth 10k in 2 years....

So what ? I'll be enjoying it... Life's too short and sometimes you just have to think sod it and jump with both feet....

Sorry for the ramble :-D

Probably the best Skoda at the moment, good choice :)

Just too big for me. I went for the poor mans Skoda instead as it was more the size I need :)

Although saying it would no doubt depreciate heavily I think my reasoning in that thread for buying it was fair.

Personally I cant stand self opinionated muppets....just jealousy, if I wanted to spend 30k or 250k on a car, I will do so.....to hell with depreciation!!.....so, whoever you are....mind your own f...ing business, JACKASS!!!

Of course the depreciation will be the worst of pretty much any Škoda as not many people want a big petrol engine anymore (I may be wrong on this though as it’s not really a big engine being just a 4 pot 2.0L)

If you can afford it including the running costs (this goes for ANY car you buy) then why not?

Personally I think they are better value than an Octavia... but then I would say that.  :D

100% agree

Why not buy after a year and save a packet ?

1/ You get a car built to your spec without compromising on anything

2/ I don’t want to wait 12 months  :D

Thank god for people like them... if everyone knew how much Škoda you get for your money then they would be Audi prices with little std spec.

Lol UncleWang well I can tell which side of the fence you are on ! Yeti_Man yes of course and I agree it was :-)

Well, I want to load up a 280 L&K with all the extras for over 40K pre-discount. If you are soft in the head I must be mentally insane. Then again - I don't care what anyone else thinks :D

Yes, indeed. But when you would buy a golf R, with identical the same engine, uses the same haldex 5 4x4-system, the same DGS-6, the same navigation, the same etc, etc, but whith less features (no traffic jam, no park assist, no ventilated seats, no heated rear seats, no phonebox,...) for also 40K, you would be a cool quy.

I prefer to be mentally insane I think :D

The depreciation is only an issue if you try and sell the car. If not many buy the 280 then it's rarity will offset some of the depreciation it also will mean that you maybe hard pressed to find one second hand in the spec you want..... Yes also trying to convince myself its a good idea to buy one too.

I dont really get those who think depreciation is soooo bad.

Unless you Buy a vintage car, a car is not an investment. Do people care depreciation just as much regarding computer, HiFi, etc? Yes yes, its a whole different pricerange, but still.....

Funnily enough, I'm having some of the same problem here.

Started looking at the Skoda Superb as a thinking-man's Audi A6 - cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, arguably prettier.

Then by the time the wife insisted on leather, and I discovered that the Business trim isn't as cheap as it looks, one ends up on executive trim and something that costs within £2k of a discounted Audi A6 with much the same kind of features.

I'm not sure there's much to choose between those cars.

You'll have functional indicators on the Superb, they don't seem to work on Audis.

They must be seriously discounting them now then, when I compared them a few years ago the A6 came out between 10 - 15K dearer than the Superb (by the time I had specced the A6 to an Elegance spec) and it still lacked a few items.

No good for me .... Try and buy a petrol A6 Avant with similar performance to the 280 and see how much it costs !

If like me, you change every three years and it's not a company car then it is major factor especially when funded with hard earned savings. As it varies so much between different makes and models it is a serious consideration and can make a private purchase very deceptive. I take the point about a car that you don't intend changing. After ten years it's probably worth the same as any other car of its age.

I guess we should be specific here. I may be missing some options, but it seemed to me that the spec of a standard A6 SE 2.0 ultra was about the same as the "Executive" Skoda 2.0. i.e. Leather, Xenons, modest Satnav.

Adding metallic paint,and auto box

A6 price = £26,568 (this is via Drive The Deal - which is approved UK dealers - and immediately cancelled finance)

Superb Exec 2.0 DSG Metallic list price = £27055. You could get £2000 deposit contribution if prepared to play with finance + probably a further £1200 from the dealer and a discounted rate of interest (not sure how to value that objectively!)

So call that £23,855.

You may find that there are differences in details of spare wheels, floor mats, etc.

Maybe £2k is a slight underestimate, but £2.7k is still closer than I'd have thought.

I've not looked at the 280 - sounds like quite a beast by my standards.

Yeah I wasn't playing fair really.... I think the closest petrol Avant is around 60K.

Mmm, well if you insist on petrol, that's true, but most Audi nuts seem to go for the BiTd Quattro Auto 320 which has a list of about £49k and comes in at £38k with a discount. Quite a lot more than the approx £30k for the Skoda.

Most people would think that would outperform the Skoda 280, but after a while there's so much difference in toys, tastes and details that this all becomes somewhat irrelevant!

This is why my last deal was on a PCP.

Love the knowledge that at the end of the 3 years I have no shocks regarding worth...I know what it is NOW!

Lets try and get the specs close then:

A6 SE is ‘from’ £32,295 (190 manual)

17” wheels (18” £630)

Privacy glass £390

Electric folding mirrors £235

Headlight washers £270

Interior lighting package £250

3 spoke leather MFSW £115

Electric memory seats £950

heated front seats £320

Spare wheel std

4 zone aircon

Floor mats

£35,455 your £26,568 (If you have included the extras to bring the specs leveller) is a 25% discount (this drops to a 17% discount if you didn’t add the options)

Superb SE L Executive (to get xenons as std) £27,320 (190 manual)

18” wheels

Columbus

Spare wheel £100

3 zone aircon

Floor mats £80

£27,500

with a 19% discount (coast2coast) = £22,275

So there is a £7,995 premium for the A6 before you take into account any discounts.(so £4,300 / £7,300 ... depending if you added the options or not? after discount) which look to be about equal on them.

Obviously there is still going to be a spec difference between the two, the A6 will gain a bit but it will also lose a bit.

Interesting. It's all about the extras. I try to keep those to a minimum ;-)

for what its worth if depreciation is defined as …...when you buy a car irrespective of brand, type or colour everyone wants it but when you sell it nobody wants it…..so therefore appreciation must be the opposite…...

I plugged in New A6 2.0 TDI Ultra SE 4dr S Tronic with £810 parking pack:

Finance Offer
£27,253
£7,382 off
21.3% saving

Seem to be some serious discounts around, might be the new A6 just around the corner. Not that far off the price I've gotten for a Superb SE L 1.4 TSI 150 DSG with a few extras.

That is typical of A6 discounts for the last couple of years

That is typical of A6 discounts for the last couple of years

Resale values will obviously begin to suffer with those type of discounts. Seems counterintuitive for a premium brand.
