Wheel bearings

Featured Replies

Hi,

Next on the list of things to sort on the Mrs' Y-reg 1.9 SDI is the *fairly* loud hum at 50mph+. Going round either a l/h or r/h corner doesn't make any difference.

I've not looked at it yet, but assuming it's a rear wheel bearing (or two), I have a couple of questions... :)

1) Most of the ones I see for sale have the abs sensor ring, but her car doesn't have ABS. Is the part the same?

2) What mad socket is required to remove/replace the hub nut? It looks like a strange star-affair.

Cheers,

Iain

Check the bearings all round first; the fronts actually sound more like a tyre on the wear bars!

That joy awaits me to - too much tramping 'round mini-roundabouts - haven't actually done the job myself.

However, the "Braking system" chapter (9) in my Haynes Manual (2000-2006, petrol and diesel), at section 10 -14 only refers to hubs with sensor rings and states @ 14 that "The sensor rings are integral with and built into the inner ends of the wheel hibs . . . If renewal is necessary, the complete hub assembly must be renewed together with the bearings" . . . . There appears to be no reference in the manual to hubs without sensor rings.

The "Driveshafts" chapter (8) refers to the Hub nut as "12-point nut", with two stage tightening, Stage 1 to 50Nm (37Ft Ilbs), stage 2, angle-tightening a further 45 degrees, except plated nut (Early models) for which there appears to be one-stage tightening of 30Nm (22Ft Lbs). And from the photos in "Suspension and Steering" (Chapter 10), it looks like its a large 12 point nut (I would say in the 20-25mm diameter range) with low-angled teeth around the circumference - I recall that they use a smaller variant of this, with internal teeth, on the seat fixings in the cabin - can't for the life of me remember the trade name.

This manual makes reference to a special VAG tool:-

http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/fabia-mk1/chassis/rear_suspension_drive_shaft/repairing_the_wheel_bearing/removing_and_installing_the_wheel_hub_with_wheel_bearing_drum_brake/

The entry in the Eurcarparts database for my Fabia saloon (100 BHP) shows only rear hubs with integral rings:-

If a special tool is required, then its a dealer job.

Cheers for the replies.

Confirmed as a fubar'd o/s/r bearing. Hardly turnable by hand when the wheel and drum are off (erk)!

I've ordered a new one. The factor reckons the tool shop across the way from him may have the required socket... Time will tell!

Just needs a 32mm 12 point socket to remove/tighten the rear hub nut. I recently replaced both of mine (bought hub & bearing kit) and was a pretty quick change. Old one slid off and the new one slid on, then tightened new nut to spec (you'll need an extension bar on the socket handle).

Ok, thanks. I've got one of them somewhere, but might be at my parents' house... Which isn't exactly local. I can find another though.

I have a long bar for such jobs :-)

Got this done today. Not a bad job, although half of the old bearing was stuck to the stub axle and had to be pried off. A 30mm socket and long bar did the trick re the nut.

The car is much quieter now :D
