T - minus 26 hours till Handover

Featured Replies

Pick up my new MY16 VRS tomorrow I would be lying if I said i wasn't a little bit excited.

Anything worth checking before I drive it off the forecourt?

Transportation blocks in the suspension being an obvious one, anything else to look out for?

Check it has all the options you paid for. Seems that some slip through the net!

Popped into a local dealer today and the new car smell is overwhelming. I'm going back later this afternoon to fill a large bin bag with the stuff.

I was taught when walking around the car to inspect the paint, you should always start at the front and walk backwards along the length of it. It's supposed to stop you eye being automatically drawn along the lines of the car, which is something the designers probably had built into it's shapes and swoops. So I'd check the front, then turn around and walk backwards scanning up and down as I 'reversed' towards the back. Sometimes the older dealers spot what you are doing and ask if you have any experience in the trade :) Most don't though. British Car Auctions used to promote this method when evaluating cars and looking for scratches and dinks.

My requirements were quite simple privacy glass (factory tint) and a proper spare wheel & jack kit. I think putting to many options on a car is pointless You might as well buy a better car imho. Many options can be purchased at a later date for much less coinage and I have vcds so will be able to code them should I require any further additions.

Would you reject the car if their are any imperfections? My experience of remedial actions only make the situation worse or not effective at solving the problem. for £20k I want it perfect. Could someone point out typical paint defect locations for me to scrutinise please. I know the roof contours are a problem area.

That is the $64K question. I sold a brand new 350Z once, the owner having waited a year just for the car to be released to the public. When he picked it up, he noticed a tiny little scratch that we had missed, something about the size of a 1 cm long cat hair. he quite rightly said he wanted it sorting, so the body shop took it in to see if it would polish out. After a couple of days the body shop said they couldn't fix it and were worried that they would cause more damage if they continued. We gave the customer several options and he chose to have the car resprayed, even though we said his brand new car would have to receive nearly 50% new paint on if it couldn't be blended. The car had very 'metallicy' paint and the large rear panel refused to blend so a large part of the car was repsrayed and that was before he ever drove it. Not only was it one of the first 100 or so 350Zs in the country, it was the first resprayed one.

it's a difficult choice and only can know when it happens. Fingers crossed there won't be any complications. I ordered a grey Octy II years ago and it turned up in Sahara Beige. Actually I could live with that, but the dealer should have told me before I got there.

As above, options, paintwork and interior. I had a Fiat 500 with foot marks on the inside of the roof, pointless trying to get it solved a week later so they stayed there.

Check if you have the "driver activity monitor" in car settings - setup - driver assistance (something like that)

A couple of us don't, it's just the fatigue sensor so not a deal breaker but it is something that is advertised as standard on the car.

There is a checklist kicking about on another thread, but when I got mine three weeks ago I basically spent 20 minutes looking the car over BEFORE I went inside to see the salesman. Gave me time to have a look at all seams on the roof, around the boot lid. The panel gaps were all even. Travel chocks. I spotted a coup of blemishes on the roof which the body shop guys came out and polished out when I pointed them out to the salesman. I checked lights. Windows. Opened the bonnet and checked all levels. Coolant and oil. May sound daft on a new car, but you should scrutinise the card condition. Biggest thing took from the checklist was this, "once the car leaves the forecourt, you'll struggle to prove any defects were present at handover of not mentioned before you leave" It's so difficult because I was so giddy. But the list helped, massively. Take your time, don't feel rushed. Ask any questions. Even stupid ones.

When I picked up my Skoda I spotted they had only taxed it for 6 months! Cheeky beggars

This is a good call. By the time the car arrives at the dealership the car has already been transported well over 1k miles, driven about etc. Its already seen a bit of a life before youve even got to drive it yourself.

I gather its also not that uncommon for cars to get damaged in transit and receive paint repairs....i dont know how much truth there is in this as I dont personally work in the trade (though my brother does...I should ask him).

When my Mk3 showed up, I didnt go to town on looking around it....weather wasnt great, had been raining and I arranged to collect the car during my lunch break so didnt have stacks of time. When I did finally get a proper look around it, I noticed someone had scuffed their foot on the drivers door trim, hard enough to actually scratch the plastic.

In fairness the door trims are made of butter so can see how easily it could have happened but had I spotted it at the dealership Id have probably asked them tl address it....having driven it away was rather too late.

As a side point having recently gone back to a company car its rather made me realise how much stress there is in running your own car vs someone elses. I have a Mk7 GTD which is a lovely car, but someone had it before me for 19k miles, dinked a couple of the wheels, few little chips and marks in places....also that its not mine am far less precious about it and running it doesnt stress me out half as much. So long as everything works and nothing is hanging off it im not really too bothered; where as I absolutely would be if it had been my hard earned money funding it.

One reason actually why I think PCH might be way to go if I ever have to run my own car again.

Is the paint Candy White? Looks stunning

  • Author

Yes candy white and thanks. We ordered the option metatlic white to start with but i changed my mind and went with flat candy white i prefer it.

The pictures are on my crap phone but once i have cleaned it and put some wax on ill get some better quality ones up.

Thanks, I get mine on the 26th. I have gone for the Moon White or I should say my girlfriend has. You will have to put a review up if you get time please

Looks cracking Scribbler. The Candy White is nice and sharp, and is offset with the sunset glass.

Good choice, enjoy!

I'm equally confused by it, I just looked at the manual. Though it says fig 85, which is the phonebox holder. I think that it might be a mis-translation or typing error.

Skoda is well know for simple clever mistakes! :P

No I read it a few times and at first thought I'd lost a page but no looks like a mistake (surely not), either that or we are both slowing crazy!

Really smart car. The Octavia seem to get better looking with the passing of ever year :)
