Rear wiper not working - suspect wiring

Featured Replies

My rear wiper has stopped working so armed with a multi-meter, I checked out a few things:

  • The fuse is good, I even swapped it with a known working one and still no joy.
  • I remove the rear panels and checked for any leaks from the rear washer jet, and there are no signs of leaking (the rear washer works fine).
  • There is no voltage across the terminals in the fuse holder, which does not seem right to me.
  • The rear wiper motor plug has four wires; brown, purple, green/white and green/red. Whether the wiper is switched on or not, I get the following voltage readings:
    • Brown to earth (wiper motor bolt head): Zero
    • All other wires to earth: About 5 volts.

Not being an expert in Octavia wiring at all, does this seem right to you? I am trying to rule out the motor being faulty. I guess the next step maybe to take the motor out and bench test it, but I don't know which terminal I should be applying power to and which is the earth (the casing?).

I have a mk2 Octavia Estate TD2.0.

Many thanks

Justin

The door also has be be closed for it to work so a switch could be faulty?

OK thanks. I was testing it with the rear boot door open :)

The wiper motor on these is made of cheese and fails regularly - it's almost certainly a failed motor

As above.

Rear wiper motors are rubbish.

Mine failed not so long ago, got one from Euro car parts for about £70. Very easy to change.

First signs of mine going was a few very slow wipes followed by nothing. It all failed very quickly.

Did you spot any water marks or splashes of water on the inside of the boot trim ? Am in the middle of changing mine now as it works when it wants too and it's leaking it's currently disconnected till I can source another

Hello! Same problem with my octavia mk2 2012. Rear wiper is not working. There is no voltage in fuse 41 (rear wiper, 15A). I checked wires in rubber gromet between boot and chassis. No sign of broken wire, only isolation is partly damaged on brown thick wire. This could not be couse of rear wiper malfunction. I checked wire harness in c pillar, everything ok. MFD shows trunk closed. Washer nozzle is working. Why is there no voltsge to fuse 41?

Mine stopped working today - the original has been in almost 10 years.  Any pointers as to how to change it? Recommendations on suppliers? Octavia 2011 FL combi Elegance.

Now fixed - a few gotchas.

To remove the arm nut cover, unclip the sides and roll it towards the arm - then you can unclip it from the arm.

Pulling the arm off the spindle I managed to pull the arm off the taper insert instead with a puller.

The cheap replacement motor only lined up with 2 of the 3 mounting points.

The replacement arm fouled the glass, so I had to repair the old arm with araldite.

I managed to break a couple of the retaining clips for the boot lining moulding, but the remaining ones hold it on OK.

The old motor gearing was ok mechanically, so it was probably an electronic problem in the control box, or the electric motor failed.

Hi all,

first post, occasional lurker.

Found this post as my rear wiper motor didn't work in the morning.

For the moment I struck lucky, as the fault seems to be in the tailgate left-hand side cable strand. I first checked the 10 amp fuse no. 41 which was ok. Then taken the 2 rubber covered plastic lugs? out with a screwdriver I was able gently pull, manipulate the cables (not a lot of give to fix a broken one if found tbh), one had a thin cut in the sleeve, a winding of iso tape, and the motor is working again. Certainly the place to look for if it happens again for me.

At first I only removed the rubber and got stuck trying to pull it over the hard white plastic bits. Those definitely need to prised out from the hole, once united they clip easily back in. 2 photos below.

Thanks to all contributors, cheers, Steve

Had this with my Yeti-wash jet worked so I knew power was getting there-I just gave the wiper a helping nudge and off it went-It's been working for weeks.

Might be worth doing this before getting the tools out.

Mine stopped working a while back. Worked only when it was warm outside which led me to believe a wire was nearly broken in two. Today I cut three of the wires and connected them with new wires I had put in. Nothing. I cannot find where the brown one goes so I haven`t replaced that. It just disappears in the hatch. A tip to others is that you have two testpoints on the motor (two smal metal points). If you apply voltage there the motor runs if it`s good. Mine is.

Anyone knows where the brown wire goes? Also checked the right side. Not there either.

Any of you above found out why there is no voltage over the fuse?

Brown wire goes to an earth terminal in the Octavia and is probably the same in your Superb.

Ok. Thanks. I’ll check and see if it is a ground problem👍
