Ultrasound test to end clocking?

Featured Replies

I thought the mileage was also stored separately in the ECU which couldn't be altered?

If you can map the ecu via diagnistics i bet you can fiddle with ecu readings...

I didnt know it was being used here already tbh, seems pitentially quite handy

Unless there is parameters for every engine produced i don't see how this works as wear rates from engine to engine will vary considerably,

eg, i had an classic shape volvo s40 2.0t and changed oil and filter every 6k, i did headgasket at 136k and engine was spotless inside,

I could have clocked the crap out of it and sold it for alot more than i did and that ultrasonic thing would have been none the wiser

I can't see that getting into the MOT.  The DVSA are reluctant to introduce new expensive equipment requirements, which is why there is no test for tinted front windows.  They will not insist on testing stations having equipment that is only available from one manufacturer as that will be seen as giving one company a monopoly.

There's also the question of incorrectly stating that cars have been clocked when the mileage discrepancy is for a valid reason such as an instrument change, there is also no requirement to put a mileage reading on a MOT, the tester can always tick the 'not displayed' box.
