Bi-Xenon adaptive lights?

Featured Replies

Quick question or two:

My bi-xenon lights always seem too low in town, the beam is way shorter than any normal halogen lamped car I have had before and I find it almost dangerous as my ahead vision in my town after all the street lights go out at 02:00hrs is hopeless.

I reckon my ahead in town is about 20/25m, is this normal?

Also is it normal on bumpy roads for the lights or in my case the offside light appears to flicker every now and then, I think its the shutter thing seems to jump not the lamp going off/on if you know what I mean, is this normal?

Lastly, on my car (Golf R) I have no forward fogs, how does this work in thick fog compared to a car with fogs, do the adaptive lights work better than a Golf GTI with the same bi-xenon lights but also gets fog lights?

Almost feel short changed not getting fog lights :)

I think the Modern Bi Xenon light setup is a short, wide beam for town driving and the faster you go the beam pattern gets longer and narrower.

Think it's speed dependent.

Disclaimer:-  I think

Regardless of how they are supposed to work, be sure they are set correctly in the first place,

because so many Factories that build and supply Left Hand Drive Cars & Right Hand Drive seem to have issues getting them off the Production Line and imported to the UK to drive on the correct side of the road with the headlights correctly set.

Among them being VW & Skoda.

So do we have the same Dad then George ?

Unlikely, he did not have a rail pass.

Just brothers in arms then.

Have a look here matey.

Ignore the first few post in that thread off Goodfinger...

Whilst that thread is useful, it doesn't answer Ben's query ref his fog lights.

I would think that the AFS lighting compensates for not having fog lights.

I have an Audi A4 with adaptive Bi-Xenon's. Still has front fog lights. Gobsmacked that the R doesn't have them.

Sorry I cannot answer your question definitively although the flickering is not normal. Would guess a loose return spring on the flap.

Had a problem with the 'flap' not working on one of mine. It was a tiny connector onto a circuit board that had come loose that actuated the flap's pushrod.

Bumper off job and managed to get a small zip tie around the board and block to hold it firm. Amazing what they have fitted inside the headlight.

I repaired it a few years ago and it has passed mot's since. Saved myself around a grand.

Not happy still:(

Came back from dropping my daughter of and came over the moors from Exeter;

My adaptive bi-xenon are the worst lights I have had the misfortune of having on a car, the beam throw up front is just too short to the point of travelling over 50mph on a single carriageway "A" road is dangerous :(

Really wish I knew how poor they were before spending almost £30k on a car.

On dipped beam lucky if it is about 30m in front to the horizon and there does not appear to be any way of adjusting them as they are so dammed clever they know what I need.

Dreading this winter with all the moors driving I do,I know the roads, its just the chance of an animal or branch you do not want to meet with only a 30m sort of visible warning something is in the road.

Trip to dealers, me thinks, still got the drivers side flicker on uneven roads and now my rear view mirror does not seem to work.....grrr

The dealers will be extremely busy in the near future so don't waste any time in getting it sorted. My VW bi xenons work differently to yours so I can only presume an adjustment is necessary.

The xenon are great on my 7GTD so would suggest something amiss with yours. Not sure on the fog light arrangement, there is a switch so it must turn something on...

Just a thought mate, it doesn't have a luggage / load adjuster switch does it? set to heavy load. (I think they 'auto level' but have never looked into how this works).

Definitely sort whilst in warranty as the 'flicker' will be an expensive fix, and may cause an mot fail over time.

How do you find the performance of yours Keith, are they what you would expect?

I know the nights have just started coming in and night driving was a distant memory ago but just feel these lack any distance.

Ben,

Mine have been okay, when driving late / early hours in driving rain and darkness. Both main or dipped. Not experienced real dense fog though, that you obviously have on the moor.Perhaps dealer can adjust for your requirements.
