Front Droning Noise/Twang

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a FL Octavia 1.4tsi DSG 2009.  I was going around a roundabout a couple of days ago and I heard a loud "twang " from the front passenger side. It happened again a little later. It has not happened since.

I have been left with a droning noise which appears to be coming from the front drivers side. It seems worse at certain speeds - most noticeable around 35mph. I put the car in neutral and the noise stayed the same.

My obvious first thought was a broken spring, but it looks ok. Would a spring cause the droning noise or could I have two problems?

Car was MOT in June - no problems. Full service, 4 new tyres and hunter alignment in the last 6 weeks. New disks and pads also 6 weeks ago

Thanks for your advice

Martin

Check for broken spring. If it has remove the broken piece before driving any further.

Thanks both for your replies. I have had a look and can't see a break, but I am working away until the weekend so it is not been used. I will get it checked then and update

Can be hard to spot. When mine went it was just at the very top of the spring and the last 6" of the spring had snapped off. No change to the car at all other than a horrible grating noise from the now knackered top bearing.

For me the snapped off bit was hanging in the rest of the spring and clanged oddly. The sound actually sounded like it was the back of the car not the front.

Thanks for the replies again. I will not be doing the work - too busy and not enough knowledge!. Would the broken spring cause the droning noise that I am experiencing? .

I have just got the car back from the garage. They could find no faults with the suspension and they could not replicate the noise.

It occurred to me after I posted that the car was jacked up to re- balance the  rear tyres the day before. Maybe the suspension was settling down.

The droning noise was the front drivers side wheel bearing which they have replaced. All nice and quiet now. The bill was £266 including the inspection which was covered by the warranty company. I expected them to claim it was wear and tear but the paid up with no argument.

There you go then. Could even have been a bit of road debris thrown up that just made a the odd noise.

Isn't it that funny ESP noise usually coming from passenger side front wheel during hard cornering?

It does on my car all the time - it suppose to warn you that your front tire is ready to dart you off the road.

But it might be caused by broken spring because there is no grip and yaw sensor is screaming.
