Webasto parking heater retrofit

Featured Replies

I'm just about to start installing the Webasto TT-E from my totalled Fabia MK1 1.9 TDI (which I btw. installed myself) in its replacement, a new to me 2011 1,6 TDI Octavia 2 FL. Ideally, it should be the next size up, 5.2 instead of 4.2 kW, but it cost me nothing, since the insurance adjuster let me take it out of the Fabia before the breakers picked it up.

Compared to the Fabia, it will be a walk in the park to install it in the Octavia, where there is factory mounting studs for the heater, a prepared blind plug for fuel pick-up and Climatronic, which means I just have to cut a 0.35 sq mm cable on the fan and connect the IPCU harness.

I will be using the 1533 timer to start it in the morning and a GSM-alarm box to start the heater from my mobile phone.

Today I bought the additional parts required from a guy who installs parking heaters for a living, driving around to the workshops of car dealers who have sold them to their clients.

He told me that it takes him just 4 hours to install a parking heater in an Octavia or similar VW or Seat. !!! It will take me 3 times as long, but it will be a labour of love.

The car dealers add a huge markup to the price he charges them, and they typically keep the client's cars for two days to justify the huge installations costs they charge.

You can download the installation instructions from this link: http://doc.webasto-russia.ru/Car/Skoda/Octavia/A5/1316419B_EN_Skoda_Octavia_2009_16_20_TDI_CR_SG_Handel.pdf

Slow progress so far, but let me tell you this: without the dedicated mounting bracket or a dimensional drawing of it, it will take a lot of hit-and-miss test fitting to make a bracket from scratch.

Did it work? Maybe the guy you mentioned should do get on here. I have a 2005 Mk2 1.9TDI and have often thought about a Webasto. What sort of price should I expect to pay?

I doubt that he would take the trip across the North Sea to do heater installs in UK :)

It works flawlessly, but I could do with the extra 1 kW heat capacity of the "C" version, mine's the restricted "E" version, the reduction is hardcoded in the controller, all the hardware is identical.

I have a minor issue with squeaking hoses at idle, which requires taking out the battery carrier to gain access.

The instructions clearly state "Only for left-hand drive vehicles", but that's because they are step-by-step instructions, relieving the installer of making any time-consuming decisions during the install. Time's money. Prerequisite is of course general knowledge of parking heater installation.

If RHD Octavias have room behind the left hand/ nearside fog light, then the only difference is  trivia like the mirrored placement of the heater fan, fuses and relay carrier.

If you can realistically take on the task of installing it by yourself, then it should be only minor obstacles, and the solution will present itself to you during the process.

The installation can be carried out in independent steps, allowing you to quickly "button op" the car for driving, the only serious down-time is when you cut and connect the water hoses.

Parts prices are as follows: 5.2 kW Webasto Thermo Top E heater + installation kit for Octavia (essential!) + IPCU (for Climatronic) £ 750

1533 timer with 3 preset times: £50

Thermo Call TC4 Entry 12Volt GSM remote control £ 190

Not sure it would be within my capability to diy. I will have to look further into it.

My poor finger tips would have been spared much pain if I had had hose clip pliers like in the picture.

I did all of the install in my driveway, with the car on axle stands and me crawling underneath the car on a nice big sheet of thick cardboard, providing cushioning and insulation. Swearing and cussing occurred :)
