1186 miles to the dealer.. for a bearing noise check..

Featured Replies

So had that weird wheel bearing noise looked at, at the other side of Europe as it turns out!

The dealer was very different in attitude to UK dealers I've used. They dropped everything to check the car over first thing and none of that ever so slightly snooty aire some have either!

Anyway.. on to the details.. as I know a few of us have this problem, and I'm not sure I'm 100% convinced yet.. but.. the said it was safe to drive, before showing me that the car had eaten the inside edge of the rear tyres (previously the fronts).

hey said it was this contact with the road that was generating the noise, even a roational bearing type noise, and that both this and the previous octavia we're prone to suffering badly if the suspension / wheels / tyres are not 100% perfect.

They checked the pressures and said they were bang on ( I check them regularly..) so I've drawn a bit of a blank, other than being concerned about the tracking.. although it's not eaten the two goodyears on the front yet.. What it has done though is made me slightly concerned about a chassis that can transmit so much from an IRS setup through to the bum dyno and steering wheel!

I'l update again after another 1.5k miles.. So that will be Monday then..

Should have added that itw as a combination of business and pleasure that led me to Poland, and a UK dealer is actually having the car in to repair the SD slot on the 12th! This dealership just presented itself. Cookie if you get the dealership right haha!

Are the rear tyres sawtoothed? The Mk2 was renouned for sawtoothing tyres as they had a tendancy to come out of the factory with shoddy geometry.....a 4 wheel allignmemt at a decent outfit for most resolved the issue......noise probably wont go away until you get new tyres....but without the geometry being sorted give it time it'll just happen again.

So it is sawtoothing. Get a full Geometry check done on a Hunter rig.

This plagued the MKII Octy with wide tyres, seems the O3 with the IRS also suffers.

You need to be asking Skoda to contribute to a new set of tyres and a full Geometry check.

What brand tyres are they? Some brands suffer more than others.....

..... And it was suggested to you a week ago in the other thread that it was sawtoothing ......

...and I replied a few days ago I have the same issue but that it is not saw toothing as I have just purchased completely new set of tires. It did not help. I did visit the dealer and tested another Octavia (not vrs) and I could hear the same sound though not as loud. So I guess it's just bad noise isolation. Now I know not to buy another Skoda next time.

Get them to check the front wheel bearings, my passenger side is on wheel bearing number 3 and drivers side on number 2. My issue is now fixed

I'm also on a new wheel bearing on the offside rear - was changed at 10k, think they're made of chocolate.

mines got replaced at 3500 miles

Would sawtoothing on the rear create a proper vibration through chassis / wheels?

Tyres on rear are the continued sport c2s that it came with, so are due a change.

In years of bolting old cars together I'd call it a rear bearing. The dealership didn't drive it either. I'll get tyres ordered. It's due in the dealer back home on the 12th so if it's doing it then they'll be tasked with it!

Any good 4wheel alignment place around bath that'll touch a car with lane assist etc?

3500-10k miles on a bearing!!!

Thanks for the tip. I had the dealer check for this as well. I've ruled out all the obvious, to a point I can only assume it's a combo of low profile tyres and Skoda's limited sound insulation. I am considering visiting another dealer to test drive a vrs for better comparison.  But right now, my thinking is to live with the noise and in 3 years time trade for another brand and never go back to Skoda.

Tyres, tyres tyres. The OctyIII seems  incredibly sensitive to them.

So, as well as sawtoothing on both of the rears, I had a massive nail in the inside shoulder of one rear continental tyre, so these were changed, and the new maxxis which was all the garage had in germany when I had a puncture then too.

Now got brand new goodyears all round and it's quieter than when new on the sport contacts! Rotational noises from front to rear and the over the top road noise on certain surfaces is a thing of the past. Finally sorted, 2 years into ownership!

I note braking brings the sound back as the weight goes onto the fronts, so it's 100% rubber. So reassured I spent the day cleaning it after it's 3200 mile trip!

Which goodyears you go for?

I would guess at eagle f1 assymetric 2's

I had to replace the fronts after 7000 miles (previous owners-Skoda staff- clearly have lead feet) for, coincidentally, eagle f1s, and had the tracking done and it definitely needed doing. It's was quite out after just 7k.

My last 2 vrs's and my brothers vrs all went through a set of fronts every 9000 miles all wore evenly with no issues

There is an excellent place in bristol if you want the details. Sorted my mk2 out brilliantly.
