Advisory Note on M.O.T

Featured Replies

Good news is car passed its mot today. Confusing bit is advisory note which reads (Engine covers and undertrays fitted)

If they are fitted it means everything is correct and in order surely.

Any ideas why they would put that on the certificate?

It just means they are covering themselves for any problems that may be hidden behind said covers.

Because what was not visible was not checked,

so the Examiners ar53 is now covered.

congratulations.

On the MOT certificate for my last car (Honda Civic Type-S) it stated "sill covers fitted".  I can recall that also being mentioned for other earlier cars I have owned.  As stated by Anddenton the tester is just covering himself by explaining why something that should be checked is hidden.

I wonder how much of the underside of my 1991 golf I could put covers over prior to this year's MOT...

...Wanders off to B&Q for some thin MDF sheets...

Reminds me of an advisory on a mates Mk2 golf.

"excessive corrosion to all of floor"

MkII diesels had a tray fella, so you might be able to get an OEM one. ;)

Ooh, feels I've slipped back into my ClubGti forum days with my Edition One G60. :D

Thanks guys, hadn't thought of it that way. Guess there could be rusty brake pipes and possible corrosion patches that the examiner cannot see. (Not on mine of course :D )

Makes me wonder wether its good to keep things hidden or best to remove the covers in the future.

clearly it varies depending on were the M.O.T was done, my car like the millions of others has all its covers in place ( Engine and underside ), but M.O.T last week, no advisories. :notme:

Depends on what the goal is. If you wish to simply pass the MoT then better keep it. If you wish to know more about your car then the cover can be removed but you may fail.

If the car is old enough then better keep the cover in place. Usually they all got some oil leaks and somebody may dislike that.

I once had the advisory "Rear seatbelts not checked".  When I asked why, they said because the child seats were plugged in. What? Couldn't you just take them out and then check the seatbelts, especially seeing as the belts are holding two children?

Apparantly they're not allowed to touch anything like that in case the seat subsequently fails and I blame them for damage when taking the seat out. Utterly ridiculous of course, but I could see their point as far as health and safety gone mad is concerned.

I remember to take them out every time now.

I wouldn't say that is too unreasonable. Mine are quite a task to fit remove and I wouldn't really want them doing it as I know if I put them in, they're in correctly.

I suppose the bottom line there is the tester isn't allowed to disassemble anything.

A mate of mine was told his car could have failed for a large set of furry dice blocking the view, however, the tester explained they "fell off as he was reaching for his pen"

MOT testers are humans. We're all different, even when trying to do the same thing. It's good. :)
