I've ordered the se l exec superb. It comes with the Columbus system which accepts DVD content. A couple of questions...

Does it accept video content I.e avi from USB?

If that avi content is HD I.e 720p or 1080p will it downscale and play?

In terms of connecting screens for the rear passengers to play the content from the Columbus head unit, is there a way to do this (physically or wireless)?

I appreciate that any video on the main columbus head unit will stop playing when car is motion, if additional rear passenger screens can be connected will the content resume playing for rear passengers while the car is in motion?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

See page 33 for a table of file formats, frames per second and resolution supported. Highest res is 720x576  at 30fps, and yes, this can be played back from SD card, USB device, or CD/DVD.

Older columbus units where all was in the same headunit did, I believe, support video out which would continue to play when the head unit screen blanked whilst driving.

I am also VERY keen to know whether this is possible but actually suspect a seperate video source streaming to devices in the rear would be better, and give much more control. Still investigating....

Thank you, so if you play a higher def video source, does it fail to play or downscale?

I expect it would fail, as it would exceed the processing power of the unit. Octavia III forum might be a place to ask, suspect their unit might be capable of the same stuff, so they might know what happens.

I'll try it next week

Have a lot of 1080p mp4 I can try on it

The mib1 Columbus only throws a playback error if the file has a too high resolution.

Im guessing the mib2 does the same.

Cheers guys, I suspect any 1080p content will need re-encoding to the supported res

What I do wonder is if an iPad can be controlled via CarPlay... thinking, iPad on a seat-holder-thingy showing video for the backseat monster... controlled by me at the front via CarPlay.

I don't think so, sadly. What I've seen so far suggests the iPhone screen is locked. I don't know if an ipad supports carplay, but I expect the screen would lock on that too if it were possible.

Chadlington is correct. Only iPhone 5 onwards supports CarPlay. No CarPlay support for iPad.

CarPlay controls your iPhone but only those Apps that are CarPlay enabled.

Does anyone knows Tim Jobs email address? Surely they can develop an app for that!

Why not transcode the movies on a PC/Mac and load them onto the iPad? I use an App called Air Video which can read the disk stored on a NAS or server and convert it. OK you will need to have a DLNA server/NAS at home to start with, or a PC with space to hold your disc collection.

For me it's easier to encode on my pc and place on a usb hard drive connected to the Columbus system, rather than use an iPad. Ideally I would then like a solution that displays for the rear passengers (on headrest attached screens) whatever is playing on the Columbus. My kids have a hudl each and often argue over sound volumes etc. and I'd rather not have them wear head phones and have control to what they are watching (well my wife would)

so there is no known solution to get the audio/video feed out of Columbus unit?

Would also really appreciate any help with video out have a L&K on order it has tv as standard would love to be able to feed that signal to a tablet whilst driving.
