DSG or not to DSG? Improvements over older 6 speed DSG...

Featured Replies

I must be doing my dealer salesman's head in! I've changed my mind/ amended my order more times than kids changes his mind in a sweet shop.

I currently have a 2012 Oct VRS TDI with the 6 speed DSG. It had some issues at the start which resulted in Skoda replacing the whole gearbox and its been fine ever since. Occasionally you can feel a little bit of DSG 'feedback' when pushing the pedal to the metal but generally its very smooth and never let me down.

I'm buying my Superb via PCP - getting the SE L Exec 190 with a few extras - but originally ordered as a manual. Main reason was the additional cost per month on the PCP and ... well ... I fancied a change (or so I thought). However today - I have changed my mind and asked them to include the DSG. Main reason being, I will probably get bored of the manual after a couple of weeks and miss the extra features from having a DSG box such as full Adaptive Cruise Control and the option change the drive settings (eco, sport etc) as I will have the DSG / SE L Exec combi. Not to mention how lazy my left arm as become since 2012 - I'm not sure its going to be too pleased with changing gear again. I think if I don't I will regret it - especially with having such a luxury car and the cost of the car.

I totally appreciate its a personal choice and there is nothing wrong with manual. What have been your thoughts on deciding the transmission? Those who have ordered manual - has there not been a shred of doubt or are you fully committed to the manual?

One final thing. Can any one comment on whether the newer DSG gearbox has improved over the wet 6 speed DSG in my Octy VRS? - I'd expect so. Experiences/ views please?

I ordered mine on the 28th August. SE L exec Estate 220ps DSG in petrol blue.  I am coming from a Vauxhall Insignia Elite 160 diesel manual which has been a reliable, comfortable and economical car for the last 3 years. Prior to that I had a Golf mk6 1.6 diesel with DSG.

That was a smashing little car with plenty of go and ideally suited to the DSG gearbox.

The Superb will be my first Skoda. I wanted to stay with a large car as I need plenty of space for my wife's wheelchair.

Haven't had a petrol car since I stopped driving Honda Accords and fancied a powerful petrol engine with no worries about DPF's and Adblue.

Really looking forward to getting the car which apparently is being built during the first week in October and feel confident that I will be getting a good performance from both engine and gearbox.

I realise that I will suffer a drop in economy but as I only do about 8000 miles pa it's not that big a deal.

Extras I've added are the steering wheel with paddles, front parking sensors and colour Maxidot.

Hoping it will be ready by mid November.

I have gone manual, I enjoyed driving the dsg test car but couldn't find enough reason to spend the extra £'s. Like yourself, I would want it mainly for the acc but I can live without it...

thanks! Having a blackline in DSG - the multi-function steering wheel with paddles was standard. I didn't realise it was an option on the DSG superb. Must update my order!

Is the ACC and Drive mode not standard on both Manual and DSG, at the SE-L level

Is the ACC and Drive mode not standard on both Manual and DSG, at the SE-L level

Yes I'm sure they are but with the DSG gearbox the ACC will go all the way down to 0 mph and will enable you to crawl along in traffic with no input from the driver other than steering corrections - I think ?????

Acc is. Don't think their would be much point of drive mode on a manual.

Acc will have limited use on a manual gearbox. On a dsg it has the capability to bring the car to a stop. Not sure about drive mode.

Drive mode should make some difference with a manual as it alters how responsive the gaspedal is.

Please correct me if wrong but I thought Drivemode was for DSG's only....

You know, Im actually not sure about that.

But if it is availble with a manual box, its not useless atleast.

Edit: come to think about it, it has to available with manual as well. Doest the mode button control the DCC?
