It is a nice frosty morning around Forfar at just around 0.*oC now.

Quite warm then.  It is the moderating effect by being close to the sea.

Being far from the sea we get some cold temp here.  http://blog.metoffice.gov.uk/2012/10/16/top-ten-coldest-recorded-temperatures-in-the-uk/

Not quite day after tomorrow but quite a start to the winter season or the below -40C we would have in Ontario.

One of my favourite movie clips....

The British Isles is quite near to the sea everyplace.

Your Link shows the temps of places that are no more than 50 miles from the Sea.

A Google will tell you the furthest you can get from the Coast as a crow flies any place in the UK,

and in Scotland that will never be more than 60 miles.

Never more than 70 miles in England.

The Central Areas of Scotland & the Highlands is warmer right now than areas near the sea like 2 miles inland from Stonehaven were it was lovely and chilly this morning.

We will see later how the temperature drops, but often its not how low it goes, but how damp it is before the temperature drops.

Right now the ground is not that cold.

Part of the British Isles being an Island Nation.

Scorchio later next week.

Coton in the Elms furthest from the coast in England i think.  Wikipedia,

Not doing a who's pee might freeze most often.

But i doubt that Government Cold Weather Payments have been triggered very often in the Midlands Post Code Areas over the last few years.

Cold Temperatures does not mean Snow falling or lying or even wet roads.

2010 was really bad because we got a good dump of snow (about 2' round here) which was followed up by a prolonged period of very cold temperatures. There wasn't actually much more snow after the first flurry.

Apart from the first few days life actually went on ok. But it was so cold the ice wouldn't melt even with salt. Eventually they used diggers to lift the ice (about 4" solid compacted snow) and put it in the back of tippers. There were still piles of ice melting in May 2011.

Just noticed this thread is still alive. I personally gave it a life expectancy of about 10 minutes when I started it.... LOL

FYI

East Scotland, positively balmy.

Due to the Welsh mountains, Pennines etc we sometimes get the mini corridor-effect like the US gets between the Rockies and the Appalachian hence the Midlands has 3 of the top ten lowest UK temperature and not even height  above sea level assisted.

That balmy weather in the North East / Cairngorm area is why there are 3 Ski Centres in a 50 mile radius.

From the East the Snow will blow.

The right amount of moisture and cold air and thats what you get.

In the past 5 Winters from Aboyne and Dyce Weather Stations there were Cold Weather Triggers

of Zero or Forecast as Zero average temp over a 7 day period 7,5,7,5,4 times.

The saying too cold to snow can be true, because it is cold but dry.

2010,

here in Forfar the Snow fell on the 23rd October, and then it stayed below freezing for 6 weeks,

day and night, it got cleared a bit and then topped up again as it snowed,

the Snow never thawed except on roofs and in the sun where it was strong, and that was about to until the day they were starting to clear it from the streets,

then there was 2 weeks of mild weather before winter proper arrived.

Fraid not.  Met office measured.

Na, Na.  Just a snap shot of just after the Winter Solstice during the last El  Nino winter.

As I said, us here in the Midlands have had 2 of the 7 lowest UK temperatures recorded.

The heart of an ex was a lot colder than that!!!!

Heard it might get "a little chilly" in Devon tomorrow.  Don't think it warrants me putting on winters though :D

The heart of an ex was a lot colder than that!!!!

Absolute Zero.

-273.15 degrees C.

Where even atoms stop vibrating.

Nope colder than that. Trust me anyone who eats your last packet of Shrimps (sweet type) is below absolute zero. He would have probably eaten my jelly snakes.... nah kidding, over my dead body.

Feel the same way about Captain Morgans and peanut butter but they were always safe.  Lol-lol does not (often) share food (and even less, drink) but having weird tastes helps preserve.
