I don't need winter tyres because I am so awesome thread

Maybe just a higher degree of common sense is expected from their buyers / drivers.

Not marketing the 'Ultimate Driving Machine'.   just transportation.

No the manual is definitely required. There are multiple modes and options.

Standard default "Comfort" drive is Gearbox in Drive, Driving Mode in Comfort and Stability in DSC. This will give standard gearbox change points, standard throttle response, standard steering feel, standard suspension settings and full stability protection.

You can just put the gearbox in sport and it will leave all the above settings alone but give very aggressive and high change points.

Putting the car into "Sport" driving mode gives more aggressive gear change points but not as high as the gearboxes sport mode, sport throttle response, heavier steering, sport suspension, and full stability protection.

Selecting "Sport +" gives the same as "Sport" but puts the stability system into DTC to allow some wheel spin and oversteer.

But in Sport and Sport+ you can further customise what does what in idrive depending on options fitted.

Selecting DTC on the traction button puts everything in "Comfort" mode but allows limited wheelspin and oversteer.

Turning DTC off altogether to give ADB-Sport differential settings knocks the suspension and throttle settings to "Comfort" and the steering settings to "Sport".

Setting Cruise control puts stability back to DSC.

You can use gearbox manual mode in any of the above modes.

That is it then, why so many RWD BMW's struggle in the Snow or ice, Driver Error, they never read the Owners manuals.

Stupidly thought they would buy a Automatic and stick it in D and BMW had sorted out the electronic assistance.

Those that went for a German Built AWD one will have maybe assumed the tyres they came with as standard could cope with UK Winters better than a Fiat Panda on ECO / Summer tyres.

or even a Budget priced car from Skoda.

If they at least put a Sticker or a warning light to tell Drivers if they are in a Rear Wheel Drive or Front Wheel Drive or Part Time all wheel drive set up, they will know which drive wheels to put their Snow Socks on.

No that's because of the limited weight on the driving wheels and summer tyres. ;)

With winter tyres in drive and comfort mode is fine 99.9% of the time.

In my above post I forgot to mention the "Eco Pro" mode which gives Standard Steering and Suspension but a very relaxed throttle response and very early gear changes. It turns your turbo BMW into a htp Fabia,

never had winter tyres dont see the point

The Ambulances never get there rubber changed to winter shoes?!?!

The Ambulances never get there rubber changed to winter shoes?!?!

But then again Ambulances don't come with sports Summer tyres designed to be stable carrying full load at high temperatures at 186mph.

Something like these on your ambulance and see how far you get in winter. ;)

Paulbrown,

Is that in your area,  or just any Area of the UK.

http://news.stv.tv/scotland/289140-record-number-of-4x4-ambulances-used-this-winter

Many places have Vehicles that are on All Season Tyres and have tyres changed to Winter Tyres,

then have AWD Vehicles for Emergency Services,

even need Voluntary Groups of 4x4 Drivers / Vehicles to assist when the 'Budget Induced;' lack of suitable vehicles can not cope.

we have NEVER had winter rubber fitted

tbh i am surprized some of thes van wheels lol

Location location location.

Ambulances get stuck while Asda & Tesco can continue home deliveries.

Maybe it is time that the Ambulance Services was privatised to the Supermarkets, or their transport providers.

Holy Peeing Competition Batman! How did we get on to all this?! I merely mentioned, in the vein of winter tyres, that there was a trick that could offer a similar effect to a LSD in order to gain low speed traction (Christ you have to be so careful to avoid the pedants in this post). A similar effect can be had when you car has it's wheel spinning slowly on ice and you have an auto......by gently touching the brake while the car is idling. The anti-stall prevents the engine dying if you are gentle. obviously this is not a guaranteed way of digging your way out of a snow bank when you in it up to you door handles. But on an ice covered street were getting going is the objective, it works. Simples

There I have said it and I'm going for a lie down and a cup of tea.

Oh here's a thought. Get winter tyres, there great :)

You didn't mention when the leaver is slipped to the left, it makes much better crackles and popples in the exhaust :) If yours doesn't yet, you need an MPE :)

Stop playing with the baiters. You will upset them. :D

Some just never spot being part of a wind up, if there are no winky / smiley phone things with the text.

(you hope they can notice quicker when steering into the skid is required.)  Winky thing.

Depending on circumstances obviously and type of skid.

Funnily enough I should be getting my Nokians for the Suzy in the next couple of days, just in time for the biggest November heatwave on record. Probably run the Beemer though the winter too at this rate ;)

LOL,  Biggest Heatwave.    again, location location location.

'One swallow does not make a summer'  as 'they' used to say.

Well I appreciate that the people living in the Poles probably don't agree, but I think it's a fair comment

BBC Weather says currently Glasgow 14C, Cardiff 14C, Belfast 13C, London 13C. not bad for a late afternoon in November

It is great, lovely, nice, super,  Speed Boat weather.

Currently 19 Degree C on the A1 @ Torness

 & 8 Degrees C on the A9 @ Dunkeld.

Maybe better when checking weather and road temperatures if in Scotland if Winter ever arrives to check here.

http://trafficscotland.org/weatherstations

I feel pretty confident if you would take a thermometer (and please do feel free to try this) and go up the biggest mountain you can find, it will be quite cold. However that's is not the point

One swallow does not prove a point, but swallows dotted all over the country do at least give an average impression, at least that's what the people who actually understand this subject and have spent their lives researching it would appear to think. Of course other people know better because they are naturally prescient and no amount of education and intelligence can defeat that

You do not drive on impressions or averages though.  So that is very much the point, and Air Temperature is not Ground / Grass Temperatures,

and City Temperatures are often higher, because Cities generate heat, and are built were less severe weather is,

as are Airports.

Many live their lives looking forward to the Ski Seasons and know when the roads will be passable and clear

and when you need to set off earlier, or be prepared to take a 120 mile detour if you do not leave early enough

in the day to take the direct route home.

Last week at the Moray Firth it was 18 Degrees and on Cairngorm it was snowing, we know that,

and often in the North East there is a 20 Degree change from Morning to later in the day.

That is what Location location location means.

The A8 at Dunkeld is not on a Mountain and the wind is from the North East and at 8 Degrees C now air temperature,

just up the Road and at a higher altitude Calvine is at 11 Degree C. (road temp is 2.5 Degrees colder)

We will see later what the Air and road temperatures drop to but seeing as it is dry,

it is hardly going to be an issue what ever tyres people have on their vehicles.

As there are high points and low points and as far as I know, nobody on Brisky has weather stations and personal satellites dotted throughout the country and the skies above. I will go with the experts and their averaged definition . it is after all a prediction as we haven't had the month of November yet

by the way I understand what Location location means, sort of (wasn't it a TV show that sold houses ?), I also understand the word 'average'. But until someone on Brisky provides me with a better alternative I will stick to the professional meteorologists and their ruminations thank you

Just a small point,

the sensors in and at the road side are measuring the temperatures and the wind direction and air moisture contents.

Maybe check these sometimes as you watch the Weather Forecasters give totally different figures from the actual at locations

not those being given for in Towns and Cities.

Very different micro climates even only 20 miles apart.

Maybe

But I'm afraid as I said in my previous post

I'm going with the experts and can't really go with the none-experts posting in a winter tyre thread on a Skoda car forum :D

I doubt very much the supermarkets fit all season or winter tyres either. They'll likely be the same fitted to their emergency services counterparts

Actually with the recent daft weather, this thread title is now pretty accurate, assuming we are all a bit awesome to begin with

gadgetman, nail on the head, they dont.

They have drivers that get where they want to go with what they are given.
