The "older" MKII Octavias (where my experience lies) could be re-mapped using the ODB port (for example using the Shark STS unit). The FL's came along and the STS's were no longer applicable and a re-map had to be done "on the bench" because of protection on the ECU.

 

Is this the same protection that would have stopped the emissions-beater code being read? Or would these be two different things?
