Front and rear lights

Featured Replies

Brochure says three different sets of front lights and two sets of rear lights.

Front are halogen, bi xenon and then the higher bi xenon with the 7 lights (aka smart light)

What are the two rears then? The brochure mentions LED rear high in the L&K spec but what does this mean?

Even the dealer I asked didn't know what these 'high' rear lights actually are.....

Could be all LED, but??

Probably the top of rear screen as in most other cars

Those have been mandatory on new cars in Europe since 1998. Not a 'legal' requirement, hence not being an MOT failure. Covered by UN Regulation 48 and called a centre high mount stop lamp (CHMSL).

Not that I would put a bit of marketing spin past any brochure writers of course.....

That's my guess too. LED bulbs in the reversing lights and rear indicator lights. It seems as if the brake lights that are above the LED 'C' shape taillights could also be LED as standard... But if not then I imagine the L&K edition has those as LED bulbs too.

Followed an L&K Estate on the motorway and the rear lights looked like the SEL I test drove. Indicators on rear not LED?

  • 2 weeks later...

On my SE L Exec Estate at the rear the reversing lights (2, one each side) and the turn indicators are standard bulbs.  Both are in the clear outboard section.

In the tool kit there is a special 'ringpull' that is used together with the Torx driver to access the bulbs if necessary.

LED's appear to be used for the rear lights, Brake lights and the single fog light which is on the RH side on my car.

The fog light and part of the rear lights are on the inboard section mounted on the tailgate.  There are other areas of this section that don't appear to illuminate.

To access the inboard section would require removal of the tailgate interior trim so I do not know if the LED's are in place for the LH rear fog light.

The 'Travel mode' in the car settings only affects the Dip direction, not the rear fog light.

I wonder if there are sections that illuminate only under emergency braking? Some manufacturers have flashing sections that only operate in extreme circumstances to wake dozy drivers behind out of their reverie!

Personally would like to enable both rear fogs. VCDS job?

I would have thought the travel mode changed the fog light too.

Just looked up regulation and I think it refers only to the country of registration not the country of usage? Can anyone clarify or confirm please??

on the subject of lights has anyone swapped the standard front halogens with Xenons yet and of so how do they look?

I checked it before I posted. The Travel mode on my car has no effect on the rear fog light.

I've asked the dealership to do this as part of their PDI on my SE Business - will let you know if it was a good idea or not.

Sorry GuernseyDonkey I should have been more specific. Can anyone please confirm or clarify regulation regarding single foglight especially when driving on RHS with a RH drive car?

Good point. You only need one under the regs, but on the offside - which it wouldn't be if overseas.

I would much rather have 2 and in previous Octavia Mk1s installed the additional bulb. Not so easy if LED!

To be registered road legal at point of sale the rear foglight has to be on the drivers side (RHS in UK, left in rest of Europe) or both.

When travelling abroad on holiday, your car would only be up for scrutiny by the Police if you were driving in foggy conditions with the nearside foglight lit. That being said,if you were in an accident in foggy conditions then I do not know the insurance implications.

Being in the forces and based in Germany, our cars are exported from DVLA to the MIL net. To do this we must comply with German Road regs. That means winter tyres and out headlights n fogs need to adjusted or changed entirely.

In my 14 years over here, 8 cars, 3 sets of headlights, 2 rear clusters and fortunately the last two only required VCDS to swap/activate the second rear fog loght as the headlights flat beam in travel mode.

It's a pain in the ass but is as it should be. I also learned about the benifit of winter tyres, always a neigh sayer, now I could sing their praises more!

So rear fogs, if travelling in Euro zone, if it is easy for you to do then get both your rear fogs enabled as I have.

I can't believe the Indicators in the rear are not LED. Especially as they are in the front clusters & in the Passat. Penny pinching in my book.

I've not lost any sleep over it. In fact I've never even given it a thought until your post ! :-D

These things annoy me!!! They were LED in the facelifted Superb II so why go backwards!

I hadn't noticed that either ;-)

They were LED on the previous model BMW 3 Series but have now reverted to incandescent bulbs on the current model - It's not just a VW Group thing....

Have I misread that completely??  Are you referring to a full swap of halogen to xenons on the front?  Surely no dealer is going to undertake without significant cost.

Cheapskates!! I wonder is there an aftermarket Candus LED alternative for the indicator bulb

Yes you can get CANBUS friendly LED’s for the indicators

However LED indicator bulbs are usually poorer than an incandescent bulb due to the LED being a directional beam.

Not that it will make much of a difference as the bulbs are hidden by the silver reflectors so personally I cannot see the point of them.

And those silver reflectors make the rear lights look the dog's testies (IMHO), which I think look so much smarter than LEDs.

Well let's put it this way, the service manager didn't give me a price but the way he sucked his teeth, he didn't have to. Plus he said it would play havoc with the electrical system and cause endless error messages. Oh well, if you don't ask, you'll never know.
