Anyone fitted a brake upgrade on Mk3

Featured Replies

Has anyone fitted a brake upgrade to their Mk3 RS?  Something like Seat do on their Leon Cupra with the performance pack and Brembo brakes.

If so, do you have any pics, ideas of cost or other information?

VRS already has the Golf PP's 340mm vented front rotors....not sure if they are single or two pots though.

Rears are solid 272mm as per all other O3's....the GTI PP does get bigger vented rears.

Brakes are more than adequate and will cope with +300hp quite readily particularly for road use.

its more for aesthetics in my case, but I am toying with the idea of the Revo remap in which case they would be a practical addition as well

Cost.....will probably be a fairly expensive one. I think the rears especially with 19's look a bit weedy, but I'm sure they are upto the job.

Probably something along the lines of the Golf R or Audi RS3 would fit......that might be worth exploring. Also maybe just changing to performance pads, discs and fluid could be a cheaper way to go

They are smaller than the ones that are on the mk3 now if pipsysp is right. Have a look at those links. The MK7 golfs boys are putting TTRS 370mm brakes on their cars

I've only just started looking into this, but those TTRS brakes look good.  I've given those links a quick skim read but will read them properly soon.  Do you know if the TTRS kit is an easy swap with the RS?  I presume a lot of the parts between the GTI and RS are identical.

These seem like a good price

I assume so they are all MQB so should bolt on. However I'm no expert just going off the MK7 forums where a few have done the swap

Those TTRS brakes look awesome. Keep us updated

The front brakes are single pot on the 340mm with the solid 272 on the rear. If you upgrade the fronts, the only real way to go is 4-pot but you have to be careful you don't overstretch the master cylinder. AFAIK the vrs only has the 23.81 master cylinder. Put big brakes on it and your pedal will go to the floor before it moves the caliper.

310 vented from the golf are a good fit for the rear but not without doing something to the front otherwise the balance might be a bit upset

Octy alloys are a bit thin on clearance for 4-pots too, most will need spacers on the front

I will certainly keep you updated, though in all honesty I don't have the 230RS yet, hoping to finally order it tomorrow. I was incredibly tempted by the Cupra 290 but in the end preferred the design of the 230RS much much more.  The one I have configured works out 32K EUR with pretty much everything I wanted.  A not as well specced Cupra 290 works out 35K EUR and its a much smaller car.

I'm thinking along the lines of, the 3K I 'save' I will eventually be spent upgrading the RS230, which has that all important from diff.  300+hp and eventually a brake upgrade.

May require a master cylinder change I guess.  I'm very tempted by 4 pot Brembos as well.  From what I gather so far its not just the diameter of the rotor that is important (as per link Tim1631 posted).  Very good point about the rear brakes though.  I might go down to AMD tuning and speak to the guys.  When they remapped my Audi A4 they did a really good job.

The other thing to remember is that 4 pots can be VERY noisy if done wrong and sometimes even the likes of Audi can't get it right (talk to the RS3 drivers about that)

If you have need for more than the PP setup (340/310) then it will need a bit of thought. One guy I would trust to know what works is DaveB from vagbremtechnic. Nearly impossible to get hold of but does visit the Golf MKV forums and Andy from AKS tends to be the front man for his gear. If you are near Bedford you're not that far from them
