Compensation for scraping my car

My dealer today managed to scrape my front bumper today, quite a nasty scrape on my 10 months old car.  They're going to repair their damage, but should I ask for compo and if so what is fair?!

Providing the give you a vehicle to use while yours is being repaired & they don't expect you to return it with a full tank then I can't think of what compensation might be needed.

Repair needs to be perfect - that's a given.

Compo ? Really jeez just get it fixed and hang your head in shame !

The car's less than a year old and now has to have a repair that's not the OP's fault.

I agree the compo culture stinks, but unfortunately we are now part of a society that thinks that if "you" will/can take no action then why should "they" put any effort into making sure nothing bad happens.

We should all understand that sometimes the unpredicted/expected happens, and be able to deal with that, that dealers mistake might have been to have not offered a sweetener along with the admission and apology - even something small and insignificant might have stopped the OP taking this any further if offered at the time.

A foreign truck driver hit the side of my car, it wasn't my fault. The car is being repaired, at their cost. Should I be asking for a small gesture of goodwill from the driver?

 

 

The dealer will apologise, have the car repaired and probably lend the OP another vehicle whilst it's in for repair so he isn't out of pocket. Don't see why they should do anything else.

The difference is that you the foreign truck driver has no relationship with you, and you aren't likely to see him again.

The dealer wants you to come back and spend more money with them in future, so offering you twenty quid off your next service for example, leaves you as a happy customer and doesn't put them greatly out of pocket.

Businesses don't win or lose customers when things go well - they do so when there's a problem that they deal with correctly (or not).

 

From my point of view the issue here is the culture that exists is how these situations are approached by the aggrieved.

Gone are the days where rectification and an apology is reasonable. It's almost expected now that compensation be entertained.

I'm sure I speak for others when I say that if I was the garage in question, I would consider a small gesture of compensation if it wasn't asked for/demanded beforehand, as the element of it being an unexpected gesture is where the surprise and delight for the customer lies.

Conversely, if compensation is demanded upfront it smacks of 'I'll take what I can get by stamping my feet' and does not demonstrate any inclination of future loyalty from the customer and I (as the garage) would be less inclined to entertain it.

Under promise and over deliver.
