Servicing your own car

Just in from servicing the 54 plate myself. Exactly 12 months to the day, and 1877 miles! But it's still had proper 507 spec oil put in, and this time a new air filter, even though the old one didn't look like it needed it at all.

Mike

How much oil is needed for a full change mate?

On mine, 4.3 litres is the capacity for an oil and filter change, but this will be different on yours -- mines a 1.9 diesel.

Will have a look on ELSAWin and see if I can find anything -- what engine do you have? Is it the 2.0 FSI? Any idea of the engine code?

Mike

Thanks mate.  Is 2.0 TSI CCZA :)

Don't forget to buy a Haynes Manual for your car off the internet and that will get you started and build up some tools ! cheers Stuart

Hope you're not putting 4.3 litres in Mike!? I made that mistake but without DPF it's only 3.8 litres.

Still as long as it's right on the dipstick.

I normally do my own serviceing when i can be bothered to do it. Even done a full brake pad & disc changebas well.

Sub 4L is ideal then. Sounds stupid, but my oil collection pump tank is only 4L :D

Personally I wouldn't ever use suction to drain oil.  The only way of properly draining out all the old oil is by removing the sump plug at the bottom of the engine and letting gravity do its job.

Mike

Oh I agree. I bought it to remove cleaning liquid elsewhere, but I'll use the 4L tank to catch the oil from the sump :)

Just reusing the old thread rather than making a new one.  I'm going to give the car a service in prep for applying a remap.  Aside from filter, oil, checking levels, checking pipes etc, what else should I be doing?

Just double checking; how many litres do I put in once drained?  Shall I put in ~3.5 and check, run the engine for 30s, then check again?

For your EA888 2.0 TSi, it it 4.6/4.7 Litres with the filter AFAIR.

So unless you are not draining the oil on a level surface, or not using the sump plug, I'd start with + 4 litres and go from there. Last time i did it, I used 4.6 litres, could of probably put in 4.7 but i'd rather not overfill. You can always add later but at the same time you don't wan't it off the bottom of the add oil marker.

Yeah that matches what I put in :)  it wasn't to the max line; more like 2/3 between min and max.  It wasn't perfectly level, as I had the front jacked up.  I left it for a good 30 mins so that it was barely even dripping. New plug to 30NM and filled :)

i always do the work myself, if anything when selling a car people have seen it's been looked after and I have all the receipts I actually helps the car sale.

plus there's peace of mind knowing what has been put in it and that its been done properly.

if you already have the tools then why not

I did read a report from Glass's guide that a dealer service history only added £500 to the average four year old car over service history. Not a great amount for the premium paid for them to carry out the service. If you're doing your own  print off a service schedule, tick what jobs have been completed at what mileage and when and attach the receipts. When you come to sell it you can present all the information and Gissin states it shows it has been looked after better than just a series of stamps in a service book which you can still update yourself.

Yup; I keep receipts for everything. All my eBay slips go in to the booklet when I order filters/oil/parts/bolts etc.
