payment asked for work under warranty

Featured Replies

My car is two years old 4500 miles. I have just taken it in for service and they say it wants air con re gassing and attention to front brakes and hand brake a total just short of £400. They said its because iam not using it enough. I buy a new car so I don't have any unexpected bills surely if it needs brakes doing it should be covered by warranty. They said I don't have to have the work done but advice me to. I have been in touch with Skoda to complain and they said its not covered by warranty. Has anyone else had this problem

Welcome to the forum.

Your car will be a Mk2 Fabia, not a Mk3.

Did they say the Brake Discs and Pads were corroded and need changed?

(If they changed them, ask the dealership for the ones removed so an Independent Mechanic or Skoda UK

can see if they needed changing.)

EDIT.

Sorry, i see they were just advising.

So yes they were 'Upselling',  ie trying a 'Rip off'.

It is common when getting a car Serviced for them to try 'Upselling',  Worn Pads, Scored discs etc,

Really it can be fraud sometimes,

and sometimes it is for your safety.

4,500 miles, 2 years old,  well we need to see the Discs really.

Upselling on the Regassing of the A/C,   Servicing at 2 years old.  just pure greed really.

But then that is Skoda & other Official Dealers for you.

Cheating customers out of money often.

No morals.

Skoda warranty is the same as any other manufacturer, and brakes are a consumable item.

And it is true that lack of use can can cause a lot of problems, especially to the likes of brakes.

Most main dealers will recommend that the air con is regassed every two years, regardless of if it needs it or not.

The question you need to ask is if the system has lost enough gas for it to stop working. If so, that should be covered by warranty unless it is physical damage that has caused it. If the answer is no, it doesn't need a regas.

As for the brakes, get them checked by an independent mechanic. There might be something seized due to low usage, there may not. At a guess the discs are rusty so the main dealer approach is replace everything!

Faulty, Dangerous, and brakes with any lack efficiency are something to report to a customer and say we strongly advise you do not drive,

and we advise you that parts need replacing, and the brake system needs maintenance.

Even though you are paying for a Service, it is only an Oil & Filter change, a levels check and some visual checks

and a report.

Offering to do this is very responsible and professional.

Cosmetic corrosion from lack of use, and no different in the condition from the Used cars on the lot which they would sell someone, maybe a 4,500 mile or less demonstrator that they do not put new discs on, just take out for 'an Italian Tune Up'

and a Service Desk up selling is a totally different matter.

Exactly why I advised to get them checked by an independent, for safety reasons.

Sorry, that was a post in response to post #3.

Things are often not covered by Warranty T&C's.  but Main Dealers need to stop taking the pith.

People have reason enough to distrust the VWG, and 'Upselling' in the way Official Dealers and Service Desks try is ridiculous.

I agree. But main dealers have always taken the pith. It pays for the s****y showroom.

Topic moved.

I had a Mk1 Skoda Fabia estate 1.9 TDI for 8 years and only had it regassed once at an independent garage. If you have your brakes checked at an independent and you do need new disks and pads make sure they fit genuine Skoda parts or your warranty may be affected. I will be interested to find what they try and upsell me when the car is 12 months old and goes in for its first oil change Joe

When I said mine had just passed an MOT the response was - 'service standards are higher than MOT standards' - thanks very much but if I get my discs and pads it won't be by you (£249 for discs and pads).

You should be ashamed of yourself George.

This person has made a single post on Briskoda asking for advice.  How is she to know that you are a bitter, twisted individual on an illiterate, irrational one-person (I deliberately avoid use of the word "man") mission to demonise Skoda and VAG.

Either answer her questions factually as others have done or keep your fingers off the keyboard.

No morals?

Too damned right, you have no morals.

Pmsl

Welcome to Briskoda. I will stick my neck out and say that most Briskoda members do not get their aircon regassed until they notice that it either isn't working at all - in which case repair may be necessary due to component damage or failure - or it is producing insufficient cool air. So if yours is working to your satisfaction don't bother to have it regassed.

Hello Askmum

I am certain that you are a 'victim' of upselling, and the words of the dealer should be taken with a pinch of salt.

I am certain that this experience has caused you a little doubt and anxiety as to the safety of your car, and that you really need positive reassurance.

Regretably a lot of opinions that you will read in this forum  do not have any firm technical base - so dont be mislead by all that you read.

In your case, to put your mind at rest, seek the help of an independant qualified professional - who will I am sure advise you that all is well.

<SNIP> seek the help of an independent qualified professional <SNIP>

Probably easier said than done. Someone who knows their way around cars may manage quite easily to locate such a person but how does a complete layperson determine who is independent, who is qualified and who is professional?

That is why people rely on Authorised Dealerships - all too often to their cost - despite the free Tea & Coffee and comfy seating in Service Reception :(

Personally I located an Independent who I trust and on whom I rely. I located them through the Good Garage Scheme. which seems to rely on customer feedback.

N.B. your experience may differ!

Wouldnt go a miss going by your own advice.

George is often giving useful advice and sharing his knowledge.. All you do is follow people around and make pointless insults, dont think ive ever heard you say anything useful.

Nothing but a troll.

"Personally I located an Independent who I trust and on whom I rely."

Seems so strange that you admitted to the above. You - who would ask people to believe in your great depth of knowledge and experience.

Your quote says so much about you, but most on this forum have already worked out that you lack both the above, and adopt other peoples views , and then pass these off as your own.

I would normally let your immaturity pass, however, I have to say that your vindictiveness in this thread is totally uncalled for, and I hope that the moderators will look closely at your continued unwelcome presense on this forum.

Grow up, and get some proper motor engineering training and knowledge before you haunt the forum again with your wild and offensive comments.

I received an email from Skoda after my last service (6 October) asking me to complete a survey to provide feedback - not that it'll do much good but the one negative I raised was 'upselling' - my rear tyres were an advisory but took the car to Performance Tyres this morning and he said he wouldn't even touch the rears (bearing in mind it's also his job to flog tyres - they've been honest with me in the past - once when I took a wee chunk out the side of a rear tyre - said it was just the rim protector and not to worry).
