Not picked my car up yet, but need to vent... [emoji36]

So I'm due to pick up my new vRS Estate tomorrow. Had a discussion with the salesman today regarding all the options I had ticked, and he said they are all accounted for. Yay!

However, when I placed the order back in August I spec'd the Amundsen Sat Nav head unit. The dealer then told me this was standard on all MY16 cars, so we unpicked it.

To cut a long story short, the car has turned up without the Amundsen! [emoji26]

Dealer says that the free Amundsen upgrade was a limited run until existing stock was cleared. But surely mine is an MY16 build?! To make it worse I specifically chose the colour maxi-dot because of it's integration with the sat nav.

It's somewhat took the sheen off collecting the car tomorrow. I know it's not that big a deal, but I like gadgets like that in cars. This is my first brand spanking new car, and the whole point in buying a new car was to spec it the way I wanted it.

Rant over. Just needed to get that off my chest!

Reject it! They didn't supply what you ordered.

The way I felt at the time I honestly thought about telling him to stick it where the sun don't shine!

Since you unticked the Amundsen option it is as ordered.... HOWEVER they certainly mis-sold the car to you regarding what would be fitted.

Try and push them to retro fit an Amundsen to the car.

+1 agree with Martin

I agree with what you are saying. There is no mention of it on the spec list for my car. I should never have just assumed it will be standard.

I asked the dealer about retrofitting the Amundsen and he said it can't be done. He said it needs installed during assembly at the factory . I couldn't argue though, as I didn't know myself if it could be done.

He did offer to fit a Kenwood aftermarket job that works with VAG models but I didn't want anything aftermarket fitted.

I would be amazed if it cannot be retro-fitted, if the Octavia is the same as the new superb then the bit in the dash is basically just a screen and the ‘radio’ is actually in the glovebox.

I wasn’t aware they did a Kenwood for the O3 (just for the older shape MKII), but having owned a Columbus I would jump at the chance of a free upgrade to the Kenwood (if it did everything you require)

Ithe it retro fitting it would be due to having to drill the roof for the aerial at a guess

He did mention it couldn't be done as drilling would be required. You could be on to something there.

I was reading another thread earlier where it could be due to the cabling that was/wasn't installed at time of assembly. Then there are coding issues as well seemingly.

Like I said earlier, I'm in no position to question whether it can be done or not.

I'll undoubtedly still take the car, and see what I can get to appease my disappointment.

The kenwood unit was for the mk2, I wasn't aware there was a unit for the mk3. Skoda uk will not retro fit an Amundsen or Columbus unit the answer will always be it cannot be done.

I shouldnt worry about it too much....perhaps try and get some discount off the vehicle and see if they will commit to activating smartlink for you free of charge once they can get the activation codes via the parts counter. You'll be able to use certain nav apps vai the infotainment then.

I have to say (and sorry really not to rub it in) where there is uncertainty about spec id generally always leave it on the order and seek a reduction before signing on the dotted line rather than removing from spec and hoping it will have it.....does avoid a certain amount of disappointment. Lack of OEM nav isnt worth losing sleep over or not taking delivery of the car if a good deal can be sought....its nice but arguably a top end screen mount nav or smartphone can provide a better nav capability.

I was reading about a Mk3 Kenwood unit today...

Ultimately I'm not overly disappointed about the lack of nav, it was more a case of my first brand new car still wasn't the spec I'd wanted.

I'm sure I'll get over it. I'm going to the dealership tomorrow as planned. I've already sounded them out about the smartlink, and I imagine I would use that far more than the nav anyway.

Will update tomorrow (mostly likely haven driven home in my new tainted car).

Thanks all.

Even if nav did came as standard and you have selected it from the options list, there should be some kind of money back option from the dealer if such case happens.

Gutted for you mate as I get exactly where you're coming from. Agree with others on here however that smart link is the only way forward here. I would push for free smart link and a full refund of your colour maxi dot. Again not to rub it in, but the Amundsen nav commands through the maxidot are a really useful feature, so playing on that may get you further regarding recompense for any potential mis-selling.

What I would say is, that having run my MY16 VRS estate for around six weeks, I'm still smiling every journey. Sat Nav or not, there's still plenty to be excited about. They are cracking cars. Just make sure you take a checklist with you tomorrow and take as long as you need looking over the car before leaving the dealer forecourt.

If the dealer specifically told you that the Amundsen is standard fit equipment then I would reject the car unless they retro fit it.

Having the integration between then nav and maxidot is really handy and I wouldn't want to be without it now.

UPDATE:

So I collected the car today - as you probably expected I would!

The dealer agreed to knocking some dosh off the car as compensation, and I've also got a free activation of Smart Link once they receive the codes.

I've forgiven the shortfall already, really pleased with the car all round. Look forward to getting to know it a bit better.

Glad you got over it; now go drive it and press all of the buttons!

Glad you got the car and like it - if they can give you circa 600 quid off, you maybe able to get the Axion module (think there maybe a kenwood one also) which retains the standard bolero but add the nav function... see this post...

Fair shout. The vRS is v well equipped anyway and as they say its often a case of not missing what you havent had. Enjoy the car.

As to the colour maxidot, as nice as it is its also in many respects a waste of time. Functionally no different to the black and white maxidot bar the obvious colour, slightly higher res and animations. Most of the time it displays in B&W anyway :-)

There are some very good aftermarket OEM compatible 8" touch screens with built in sat nav for the MK7 Golf which have SD card slots in the screen fascia & are compatible with all the OEM functions of driver mode, rear camera etc, just they display as the OEM native resolution. the sat nav side displays at the full better HD resolution & uses good download maps....

I have seen installs etc & very good......even I would consider buying this instead of fitting a standard sat nav from VAG.................just my car had Discovery as standard..........

Nice one, they are really nice cars to drive. I still prefer after market sat nav like Tom Tom for the more comprehensive speed camera database, especially local mobile camera's.

I have the Admundsen (MIB1 or whatever it's called - 2013 Octy) with the MaxiDot, although the nav instructions on the maxidot are great (colour maxidot is iirc higher res) otherwise I would say it's not worth the bother.

I have an active brodit mount for my iPhone 6+ which is basically the same size and the admundsen anyway, plus camera alerts and much more sensible voice recognition - although sill hit and miss sometimes.

Certainly when I change my car I'll be getting "smartlink" or whatever it's called but I wont be bothering with built in sat nav unless its free.
