TDI ATS used wrong oil advice

Featured Replies

Hi,

I took my 2001 1.9 TDi Fabia to ATS for an MOT and oil change.

I was just looking over the invoice and it says:

5LT HELIX ULTRA 5W-40

I looked up online and Helix Ultra seems to be VW 505 00 certified but not VW 505 01 which I read is necessary for this PD enginge.

Is this right? Am I within my rights to ask ATS to change it for something VW 505 01? Is there any way I can tell that they do?

You took it to ATS, speaks volumes really.

By all means ask but unless you watch them you will never know for sure.

Could just be a bad a branch. I use ATS in Aylesbury and they're really good. So much so that I've just emailed a compliment to their head office regarding the high standard of service I always receive which is not something I very often do.

In response to the OP's question, I'd call them and explain your concerns and give them a chance to rectify things first. Could just be a simple mistake.

Thanks. I was travelling a lot in September and didn't think about the MOT until the week it was due. All the independent local garages I know are pretty busy and couldn't take it for 2 weeks or more... so I thought I'd try them just for the MOT (also its right by my flat so quite convenient).

I did ring them and they said come in on Monday and they'd check everything. I guess I was posting more to confirm that it is an issue and that if it is Helix Ultra 505 00 I am not being unreasonable to ask them to change it for 505 01.

How bad is it to drive a couple of miles on the 505 00? or is it better not to use the car at all.

Its probably paranoid to suggest it will just explode or something, that isn't the issue.

Its likely to be to due with cam lobe wear etc, long term issues.

I would imagine personally its the long term impact it would have, you've already driven it once anyway

If there was any immediately damage to be done wouldn't it be already too late. Doubt its that important for the sake of the pittance of miles you've probably done there and back.

Yes, ask them to change it.  Also tell them you want to see the bottle of what they use & watch it poured into the engine.  Be nice and don't insist on a new oil filter.

Then do the right thing by your car and stop using crap generic service centres that don't understand the specifics of the vehicles they are fixing

Thanks - thats exactly the sort of advice I was hoping for!

I went in this morning and they said the oil on the invoice was just a dummy. They put the reg into the system and the correct oil filter and oil for the car are automatically delivered - they just don't always enter this accurately on the invoice. So they went into the system and showed me a screen that listed.

Shell Helix HX7 PRO AF 5W-30

So I assumed this is a higher grade oil and thought I should trust their system.

On checking it seems this AF one is certified for Ford specs, but that the VW spec one is Shell Helix HX7 PRO AV. Is there likely to be much difference to these - or  could they be the same product that has just been passed through the certifications under a different name.

I'm still thinking of taking it to a better local garage for a fresh change...

Oh dear. Shell Helix HX7 Pro AF is not suitable for a PD engine either.

It's rated for Ford Ford WSS M2C913-A, which is their Duratorq diesel engines.

If they're working for Ford specs (because of the PD engine used in the Galaxy), they need Ford WSS-M2C917-A, which is the same as VW 505.01

I thought they would come up with a typical answer like that or simply saying it was a typo. If it was me I would change the oil PDQ for your own piece of mind.

Yeah - for the sake of £65 I've decided to just take it somewhere else for a fresh change. Won't be going back to ATS.

I rang up again and now they say it was "Shell Helix Ultra Professional AG 5W-30" which as far as I can see is also not VW 505 01 although they insist that is what the supplier says is the right spec for the car:

He did say they would get a 505 01 in and do it in front of me tomorrow though.

Oh dear, what a bunch of incompetent  ******

This is one of the reasons I service my car myself.

Ring them up and tell them it's WRONG AGAIN! Tell them you have a PD engine that requires VW505.01 spec oil or long term damage will occur to the fuel injection system. Tell them they've had two opportunities to do the job correctly (your original service and your follow-up inquiry) and you'd like a FULL refund as they don't have an understanding of the technical requirements of a VW PD engine. If they refuse then get onto their Head Office.

edit: didn't see your last post - You've given them THREE opportunities! Even if they put the right oil in now I'd still want my money back for having to waste my time sorting out their lack of knowledge. Their technical skill is part of what you are paying for.

tell them to use the Shell UK Lube finder - it gives the right answer straight away

And make sure to point it out twice ! lol

Oh dear, best to save them future embarrasment in future, take it somewhere decent.

I've always felt a bit paranoid feeling I can't trust my servicing with these garages, and using the genuine Quantum oil and parts fitting with diligence myself. Turns out I was right and not paranoid they are out to get you!

I don't think you would have these issues with a main dealer or good Skoda equivalent though.

I took it in this morning and they changed it for me while I waited.

This time they had Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30 (they showed me the can) which is VW 507 00 which I think is also fine for PD - from http://www.oilspecifications.org/img/vw-specifications-chart.png

So I'm happy that they put it right in the end.

Props to them for getting it right eventually.

If nothing else it gave the engine a nice flush.  Come out fairly black did it?

Buy the correct grade of oil yourself with an oil filter, then pay a garage to do the job, then just get charged for half-an-hour labour..??
