Power socket near handbrake

Featured Replies

Help.

I've blown something today - I plugged in something that carries a heavy current, but had a 15 amp inline fuse and it went dead.

Now there is no power to the socket, although there is at the rear one. I've checked two fuses at the end of the dash - all fine. I'm thinking there might be a problem with the wiring to the socket near the handbrake, but can't get at the wiring socket/ plug, or even get the socket body out of the plastic panel .

Is there any schematic wiring diagram available, or at least advice on how to get the cig light socket out for checking??

I think you can get in to it by taking the great lever trim piece off and reaching back to the socket

Jerry,

the side panel of the centre console is just a push fit into the main frame work.

I've emailed you a diagram.

Yes, I've already had this off earlier, but the darned thing is just out of finger reach

Thanks for the pic, big help

No you can't - tried it, and out of reach.

But have you checked the correct ones?

I found I was looking at it the wrong way up, as the lines of fuses are symmetrical look at the "nibs" on the outside to get the proper orientation. Fuse 1 is bottom left and 36 is top right.

Ok, thanks, I'll check this out in the morning - could save me some grief!!

I would strongly second this suggestion.  The diagram in the owner's manual is somewhat confusing IMO.  Every time I go in to that fuse panel I have to spend five minutes checking the fuse ratings against the layout in the diagram to make sure I've got the orientation right, so that I know I'm going to pull the right fuse!

Sorted!

Now in daylight, a clearer head and your help, logic returned to my feeble brain.

A 20a fuse had indeed blown, and now I have to replace all the bits of trim I was pulling off last night in an effort to get to the power socket :whew:

Glad to hear you got it fixed.

Put a dab of white tipex on both front and rear fuses, and carry spares, these are the most likely fuses to blow than any other.

Really? Never blown any on my 5 year old car.

It'd be interesting to know what you actually plugged in that blew the fuse in the first place......I've never had one blow either.

As the handbook is confusing I'm going to print this A4 and fold it up in the fuse cavity.

Does being a RHD version cause the box to be installed differently?

I think because it's on the other side in the UK the box is upside down in the manual, that's what causes the confusion.

Yeah

Or

Maybe upside down installation (for RHD) with right side up illustration (still)

To check.

Is that the actual layout in the car or from the Handbook?

It's the layout as looked at in a UK spec car.
The handbook has the numbers printed upside down on the fusebox layout diagram for us in the UK, that's what causes the confusion.

So

Upend the lid and it then makes sense.

There is nothing on the lid.
This is how it appears to be in the manual

Whereas this is how it really is.

Oops

Sorry Urrell, the Asians always print it on the lid.......thankfully I've never had to go there.

The lid doesn't come off!!

Thanks, I shall also be printing that off.

So would I. In my experience 99% of fuse (of all kinds) failures are as a result of them doing what they are designed to do, I.e. protecting the associated component from an overload. It is very unusual for fuses merely to fail in their own right.

The lid doesn't come off!!

It most certainly does!!!!!!

It does get retained at one edge by the door seal, but it comes off with a bit of wiggling.
