Severe tyre wear on very inner edge ? HELP please

Featured Replies

Hi, it was that time again, MOT... just giving the car a quick once over (as you do) I found all the usual suspects ok after a quick visual check, so I duly got to the garage on time and up on the ramp the car went, after some short time the examiner asked me to join him to see why he couldn't pass the vehicle... upon inspection from the ramp at waist height he turned the off side wheel to full lock showing very serious wear through the rubber to the stringy type construction inside the tyre, yet the remainder of the tyre ie the remaining 7/8ths seemed fine and he could not find any problem with any suspension joint or wheel bearing etc, he like me is puzzled as to why the tyre should wear in this manner, it drives in a perfectly straight line, has never pulled to one side, etc etc.... Any thoughts on the cause would be appreciated. Obviously a new tyre required straight away and I guess a general tracking check but I must say in 30+ years of motoring I have never seen tracking cause a tyre to wear like this !

Probably best to get it on a hunter rig for a full four wheel alignment. Have a look on alignmycar website for places with a hunter.

Offside is the Right / drivers side????

If so, excessive toe-out and under inflation of tyres. Passenger side stays parallel to the direction of travel, drivers side points up the camber. I'm guessing you might be running about 32psi up front? you'll find there's wear on the inside of the LH tyre but not as much.

I'd be getting the bushes checked again (especially the console bush on the front lower control arm), a decent 4 wheel alignment, run 34-36psi in the tyres.

Yes O/S/F = drivers side (in UK), As per previous answer I have found a local 4 wheel alignment centre who use a Hunter Alignment machine they only do steering and suspension alignment so I guess they know how to do it as thats all they do, in fact I remember going there back on the 80's with an old Ford Granada I had at the time which I drove for years pulling to the left but no tyre wear..lol, just before I sold it I got the alignment done and it was a different car, just goes to show I've forgotten more than I can remember... its the age you know, now what was I doing here ?? (Thanks for your explanatory reply very useful)

I used to have worn tires from both sides - outside side was from hard cornering and inner side is damaged arm bushing. Usually the main rear lower arm bush. It may be also combination of bushing and arm joint.

I've replaced all arm bushes with Powerflex and never had problem again (I drive 30k km per year and replaced OEM bushing every 20k)

Do the Powerflex bushing transform more road noise to the inside of the car?

Hardly noticeable but be prepared for racing car feeling - you will feel every bump but your get precise handling. Don't be scared it is not that tragic in terms of stiffness !!!

Powerflex is much more stiffer than OEM bushing.

If you damage bushing as often as myself, go for Powerflex. You should also try stiff Seat Leon bushing, it is somewhere between OEM and Powerflex.

Once you go Powerflex, you never go back.

Seems somewhat contradictory.

I assumed road noise is from tires and so on. Otherwise, noise from rally style driving is heard on any type of bushing :-D

Unsure, what was meant by road noise then.

NVH:  noise, vibration, harshness

If you can't understand it, I can't help you
