Car received! Questions...

Featured Replies

Hey all

I've finally got my beast (Fabia MK3 1.2 TSI 110). I've had a good old read of the manual and a few things don't make sense. Can anyone clarify please?:

  • On cruise control, what's the difference between the 'take control' button and 'cancel' switch?
  • In the book, it says to *never* turn of the climatronic system. Er, why? What if it's hot and I want the windows open but not the internal system on?
  • No one touch electric windows? :o
  • Anyone with KESSY, does the car still autolock within 15 mins?
  • I don't quite understand the purpose of "Parking Lights". Can someone kindly explain? The manual suggests if I use this feature it won't turn it off automatically?
  • The dealer said to me "Yea you don't need to run in cars these days". The manual contradicts this. Who's right?
  • (This isn't about the book!) As my mileage is likely to vary a lot, the salesman suggested I just use variable servicing rather than paying for a service package. I agreed but stupidly didn't ask what the hell that meant!

Thanks :)

Only get a driver's one touch if you specify rear electric Windows too!

Where is the take control button?? My cruise has on, cancel and off. A flick of the spring cancel button will cancel it but enable it to be reactivated from the stalk controls again. Flicking it to off turns off cruise completely.

Parking lights confuse me too!!! I just leave my headlights on all the time and when ignition is off then all lights turn off too!!

I think running in is both right in the manual and the dealer. The manual is to be extra cautious as it's written down but really the car is ready to drive from the factory just needs to be loosened up a little.

Variable servicing is when the car calculates when it needs it's service based upon type of driving and mileage. Wasn't aware this was available on the fabia.

On climate control:-

  1. You can take manual control of it and turn it right down; just press a "fan speed" button to take it out of auto, or "Econ" to disable the air conditioning functionality.
  2. Not disabling the AC is strongly recommended because you want to keep the refrigerant circulating to keep the system seals lubricated.

Mine came set with variable servicing which is better for me as I do low mileage so it will save money hopefully.

I'm only planning on keeping it about 3 years so hopefully I'll get away with only 1 service  :D

Damnit, that wasn't worth £250 for one touch! Buggers, my old Fabia had it!

The take control option is here, note . I'm confused maybe how it differs between setting the speed with [C]....

I see, I just guess I'm concerned about the impact on my MPG on having it perma-on. I don't see "Econ" though?

I don't see the point of "Auto". If it's not on I can still select a cabin temperature.... or won't it work if Auto isn't on?

Thanks :)

Haha I only do about 7K  a year, so does that mean instead of doing it yearly, you just do it when you hit say 10K or something?

There's an oil quality sensor fitted to the engine I believe and once it feels that the oil is degrading then it will prompt the ECU to send the service message to the dash.

I may be wrong but i think that's how it works, I've had mine since the end of June and only put 1300 mls on it as I've been cycling to work as often as I can.

Interesting, I didn't know this! I would cycle to work but I just cba as it's a 30 mile round trip!

It's just over 14 mls in total for me so not too bad, it only takes 5-10 mins longer cycling, it depends on what bike I use.

Yeah thats how it works.

A car that does short trips will need servicing sooner than one that just does long trips. As the oil degrades faster due to cold starts iirc.

Its better for the higher mileage driver

504 grade oil should be used with variable, and 502 with fixed.

To switch off the A/C compressor function, just press the A/C switch, all the other functions should work okay.

One the comment about needing to keep the A/C enabled all the time, I thought that ALL compressors used by VAG currently operated continuously but at a very low duty cycle, ie working/pumping just enough R134A round the system to keep the seals in good condition (traces of oil will get transported round the system along with the R134A ).  With the old compressors that had a electro-magnetic coupling on the drive pulley, if you disabled the A/C you did run the risk of having R134A leaks due to the seals drying out, bottom line really is, in my experience, these systems all leak through the plastic hoses, but also at some of the pipe work seals even if you run the A/C all the time.

It seems to be a funny old world, first Audi did variable servicing, followed by VW, but Seat did not follow - I thought that Skoda also left out that option?

Now my wife has a Polo with the 1.2TSI 110PS engine in it, and it comes set up for fixed servicing, and some of you guys have the same engine in a Fabia with variable servicing?? I had suspected that as wife's car came with fixed servicing, the extra hardware required for variable servicing had been omitted - though I suppose that I can "call up" the oil temperature, so that means that the instrumentation does exist in that engine in that car!

I'm confused about that servicing issue. I've emailed the dealer to confirm whether it is truly variable....

Re: the A/C rum4mo, I couldn't agree more. I'm 100% my old Fabia kept the compressor going so why wouldn't it now?

The dealer can change it between fixed and variable, they do usually come on fixed tbh.

Hi - that's the Resume (Res) function ( what the manual calls "Take control again" !!).

Pressing it "Resumes" a previous "Set" speed, or, if no speed has been previously set on this journey, then Res will both Set and activate CC - or SL, if you're in "Lim" mode.

Oh - and where it mentions CCS on one line and GRA on another line - they're both the same thing - Cruise Control System in English and GRA is the German abbreviation!!!

==============

KESSY - yes, it auto locks after about 30 seconds if you don't open a door after unlock.

===============

Parking Lights - are for when you're parked (!) and want marker (parking) lights iIluminated - e.g. Parked on a dark country road - so they'll stay on. Or you can use the "Euro" parking light function with the indicator stalk - left or right-side parking lights, which also stay on as long as you're parked.

Wow you've answered all my questions perfectly, thank you!! Apart from I have another KESSY query... in the manual, it says this on p.52 with regards to KESSY

One final question re: service.

I've just had the quote, it's going to cost me if I want their package:

a) Service 10 000 miles/ year –  £ 14.11 = £507.96 for 3 years

B) Service and maintenance 10 000/ year – £ 18.64 = £671.04 3 years

c) Individually it's £139 for year 1 & 3 and £259 for year 2. = £537 3 years

Obviously c) doesn't include any maintenance costs. Which do people generally opt for based on this info?

Thanks

I'll just answer the KESSY question- service deals a bit different in Ireland ( the one I bought into was like the first one - it was the only available)

That line on manual means that if you just walk away from the car, it won't magically lock itself. You do have to either: swipe the door handle or press the lock button on the remote.

Enjoy!!

You are the Fabia MK3 oracle. Thank you :) Funnily enough, according to Blade Skoda I was the first person to ever order the full KESSY system. No one knew how to lock it and thought it could be faulty... I worked it out and let them know a day later. But really, it's flippin' awesome.

Yep - mine was the first Fabia here with the Front Assist -- they assumed I was talking about Front Parking Sensors when I ordered it. That's very nearly what I got - only I double-checked a vague description on the order.

Mine has the alarm as well as full Kessy. Another unusual option here, by all accounts.

Also - today was the first time the Front Assist applied the brakes in anger! I had glanced at the radio screen when the car in front decided to stop very quickly - well before the traffic lights ahead - Front Assist decided to take over - and boy, did it take over!

Gave me quite a shock - but also, a great peace of mind knowing it's there keeping an eye - just in case !!

I use the CC and SL a lot - so I put a lot of time into getting used to the two modes and the different ways that buttons B & C operate in either mode, as well as the short press / long press differences. I'm really used to it now - and would definitely order that combination again.

Unlike cornering foglights !!

Ciao !

That's quite the tale! It's actually good to know these features that you potentially never see (or want to) actually work. Pretty awesome stuff! I totally get the CC/SL now thanks to you. Incidentally I have cornering fog lights, I think they are good. Why don't you like them?

Cornering fogs -- been watching quite intently what they add to vision on the road - and I'm not convinced that they add an appreciable, valuable amount of information.

Unless, there's some particular situations where they do - and I've not come across them yet.

I see them turn on and off, and they seem to just brighten up  a small area that the headlights have already illuminated to some degree.

Also - there is the part that VCDS can turn them on for way less than the official price ! (maybe that's the bit that sticks in my throat!!)

I am though, prepared to admit that I have missed something about cornering fogs !!

I wouldn't add them to the order again - like I would add Front Assist.

Different opinions on here about Front Assist too, and some wouldn't agree !

They never really do imo.

Just abit of a fancy gimmick.

Might be a little handy down a really dark lane if youre tryna turn around.. But theyre not up to a great lot.

Fog lights in general arent up to much though are they.

Well - haven't had a good pea-souper to see how they perform! ! They seem to have a good vertical cutoff to do the job, but I'd be interested in how far they can "see" under a fog.
Good time of year to go fog-chasing to test them !! :-D  :D

Fog chasers... sounds like a dull Channel 5 documentary!
