V-Power/BP Ultimate - Worth it?

I know this has been discussed before but I did a search and couldn't find the relevant threads.

Just wondering whether people have found that running ordinary cars (in this case not the VRS') on Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate is worth in increased cost in terms of economy and performance?

 

I'm on my third week of running my car on V-Power Diesel after using ordinary fuel previously. Honest John (who seems to be getting increasingly grumpy these days) swears that for the 7% increase you pay for the fuel, you get a 9% increase in performance. At the moment I'm paying about 7.4% more for V-Power than ordinary fuel, and at the moment I'm not seeing enough of an increase in economy to justify the extra cost.

 

Anyone got any thoughts? Am I being impatient or unrealistic?

I use Tesco 99 RON  and Shells V-P in my M135 as it seem to make the exhaust crackles and popples better :D If I got a 9% increase in performance I'd be seeing an extra 29bhp. I can assure I am not.

I think the only differance between super fuel and supermarket cr@p is one contains cleaning additives one doesn't.

 

Having said that I think Sainsburys fuel is actually rebranded BP. My Vrs has alway run on Shell super diesel and she likes it.

I can see an argument for using premium diesel every once in a while to keep things clean.

But I buy the cheapest I can find - usually Asda

I don't see an increase in performance or economy when using v power, I do treat it to a tank every now and again. However I will only use 'branded' fuel rather than supermarket because I get better MPG. I love a fuel debate on here, opens up a can of worms.

I get the same increase in mpg that I got from using V Power / BP Ultimate etc.... by using Millers additive in addition to normal diesel.

 

The approx extra cost per tank using the V Power stuff or premium diesel etc... is around £3-£5.... Buying a 500ml bottle of Millers for around £12-£15 (which does ten tanks) works out at an approx extra cost of £1.20-£1.50 per tank..... I only use branded standard diesel rather than supermarket though.

 

Think i'll stick with the Millers thank you. ;)

My own experience re v-power is mixed:-

 

>v-power diesel - no difference to economy or performance on my previous 2003 Skoda Superb I 1.9 100pd

>v-power petrol - On my 2001 Octavia 1.4 16v 75 economy slightly improved but not quite enough to cancel out the extra cost however car always a LOT more responsive and if I use standard 95 RON petrol I can sometime "just" detect slight pinking (from new - dealer said they all do that!). As there were reports of piston failures of these engines at low mileage I've always run on higher octave fuel just to be sure (usually Shell vpower or Tesco Greenenergy) - Engine now 120k miles with no problems at all

>v-power petrol - On my 2006 Panda 1.2 , doesn't make any difference except possibly slightly smoother

 

I've decided to always run my 2014 Superb 1.4 tsi on higher octane fuel - usually v-power

I've tried the 'posh' diesels and petrols, every now and then for years and never seen a noticeable difference. Even with prolonged use. :(

Wouldn't that depend whether or not your car is mapped to make the most of it which I doubt it is.

 

My pulsar for example is designed to run on 99ron ( or whatever the japs use) and produces 227bhp

 

The uk sunny is designed to run on 95 or 97 and puts out 217. As far as I know the only thing different is the mapping.

Your diesel will create less soot using shell nitro diesel because it has GTL mixed in it.

I have also used Millers Ecomax and noticed an improvement, I'm about to start using Diesel Rhino.

Get my tesco clubcard points and get some better fuel economy.

I saw the Rhino stuff but it worked out a lot more expensive that the Millers stuff... Which can be had for around £12 for a 500ml bottle.

 Sepulchrave will be along soon to chastise you both for having silly thoughts about snake oil and wasting money. I use 2-EHN in standard supermarket fuel and have already been told to "not be silly" - HaHa.

I am consistent. I see no improvement to power (or consumption) it just makes a bettererer noise :p

I've had cars mapped, tuned mechanically (the old fashioned way) in both diesel and petrol cars and it made no difference which fuel I used in terms of Power or economy. The exception being my old Uno Turbo II had to be used with octane booster in order to help 'quell' the detonation :D It blew up on the next owner after me :(

Every petrol car I've owned has slight improvements on 97+RON fuel,which ever brand.

Not talking masses of power extra etc,but things like more responsve/smoother running etc.

There are differences (as I said I like the noise improvement) but I have had cars with mpg metering for nearly 20 years and as a high mileage driver I get to fill up every week and take note of my mileage (I'm self employed and claim the miles) and see more difference in mpg (which is a function of the alleged improved performance) if I reduce my cruising speed by only a couple of mph.

We used to have one bloke at work with a Ford Fiesta derv van swear blind that the dearer fuels let him rev the engine higher ,but personally ui never noticed any improvement in any of the firms vans (TDI /NON TDI ) with fuel from supermarket to top of the range quality in the Ford fleet, and the other firm's van( GOLF Caddy SDI) drove better all round on supermarket stuff. In over 70k in Furby I've never noticed any difference between all the bog standard diesels from supermarket to any of the so called extra special clean derv .

I remember that article. I quite like Bentley, he tends to be fairly straight forward :)

 

There was a tv article which found there was no real apparent difference too, Can't remember which one it was, but will have a google about for it.

I am currently doing a lot of motorway miles and thought I would try a full tank of normal petrol in my 1.6 Astra V reg so not new and it managed

387 miles from the light first coming on till coming on again

Tried some shell V power and the same type of driving and same journeys it made 417 miles :-/

The Astra get used to and from work and has been used motor way miles for 8 weeks now

I am on my second test run now gonna put in normal fuel then v power again just to see if it really does work
