Overly 'aggressive' Stop/Start

Featured Replies

Brake light stay on on 'Auto Hold' because it's the hydraulic service brake that is being held on so triggering the lights. It's the same on my X6 - and just as annoying! I would like the brake lights to go off but it seems because it's the normal operation of the service brake and not the handbrake there is nothing (simple) in the way of a solution.

Had a really close look at this over the last few days and the start/stop definitely cuts the engine while the car is still moving. In the DSG it seems like it cuts the engine as soon as the DSG presses the clutch in 1st if you are on the brake.

Trying to bring it to a stop in traffic and then back off the brake a bit to stop the engine cutting will not work on mine unless you are uphill.

Definitely tonight two or three times flat ground engine cuts and still moving.

Normally switched off but keep it there for the odd useful time. Might have to code it out because it is just too aggressive, maybe it is the EURO6 but the last one was not that bad

Didn't want to start a new topic for this. My problem is not an overly aggressive stop start system but the opposite.

On my 150ps manual is seems to function intermittently - on some occasions it works and at other times the engine keeps running and the auto-hold icon appears in the top right corner of the maxi-dot with a line through it.

Any ideas anyone? I have the auto hold button activated. My arrival and stopping style at queues or lights is not overly harsh or erratic and I'm pretty sure I do the same procedure every time I come to a stop.

Sounds like a similar system used on the latest Mondeo. The maxi dot is telling you that it isn't shutting the engine down. There'll be multiple reasons for this but can include any of car engine started too recently, car relying on engine to maintain temperature in cabin, battery charge not acceptably high, too much drain on electrical system (eg all light, heated seats and windows etc). In this weather it's more than likely it's keeping the engine on to heat the cabin.

If you turn off absolutely everything you'll find, like when being tested for emissions, it'll turn off at every opportunity!

Also if it's a diesel it won't shut off when doing a DPF regen.

Loads of parameters that affect the stop/start system, all in the manual...

Full list of shutdown conditions:

  • The gearshift lever is in Neutral.
  • The clutch pedal is not pressed.
  • The driver has fastened the seat belt.
  • The driver's door is closed.
  • The bonnet is closed.
  • The vehicle is at a standstill.
  • The factory-fitted towing device is not electrically connected to a trailer.
  • The minimum engine temperature is reached.
  • The charge state of the vehicle battery is sufficient.
  • The vehicle is not on a slope or on a downhill section.
  • The engine speed is less than 1200 1/min.
  • The temperature of the vehicle battery is not too low or too high.
  • The pressure in the brake system is sufficient.
  • The difference between the outdoor- and the set temperature in the interior is not too great.
  • The vehicle speed since the last time the engine was switched off was greater than 3 km/h.
  • The particulate filter* is not being cleaned.
  • The front wheels are not turned excessively (the steering angle is less than 3/4 of a steering wheel revolution).

Full list of startup triggers:

  • The clutch is pressed. The max./min. temperature is set.
  • The Defrost function for the windscreen is switched on.
  • A high blower stage has been selected.
  • The START STOP button is pressed.
  • The vehicle moves at a speed of more than 3 km/h.
  • The difference between the outdoor- and the set temperature in the interior is too great.
  • The vehicle's battery is not sufficiently charged.
  • Insufficient pressure in the brake system.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like it is probably due to the cooler weather we've been "enjoying" here recently over-riding the stop system.

My 150PS diesel manual works as expected - no early shut offs yet. If you happen to stall it will restart which is good.

If you happen to stall it will restart which is good.

Yes I'd noticed that when I stalled it in low 2nd gear. Cuts out all the panic and bad language that used to accompany a low speed stall!
