Which Fabia for 17 year old ?

Featured Replies

Hi all. My eldest daughter will be looking for her first car soon   and we've been told to go down the Fabia route. She's been looking at the silverline edition (cheap ins. etc)  but I thought I'd ask you guys, what exactly is the spec.on the silverline apart from the obvious silver paint ? Thanks in advance.

She can keep her mitts off my VRS by the way !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Choice of engines with them.

1.2 12v 64hp or 1.4 68hp.

Apart from being silver and having 14'' alloys as standard, I've noticed the do have front powered windows and mirrors (not sure if they are heated as well), AC, ABS, PAS, adjustable steering wheel, remote central locking(maybe with alarm). They do not have front fog lights, OBC and traction control. I've seen hatchback and estate versions as well. Didn't see any heated seats on any of them.

I think the 1.2 will be cheaper to insure wont it ? Is there any bad points I need to be aware of when I'm looking at one ? Obviously the bodywork etc. is the same as my fabia vrs  but what about engine etc ? They sound like a decent spec'd car for the money.

1.2 is class 2, 1.4 is class 5. I'm pretty much amazed of my 1.4 mpi engine: bullet proof and fun to drive (and it has 4 cylinders). It's 15 years old, ~120.000 driven miles, it can still go over 5000rpm without burning oil or throwing parts through the engine bonnet.

Can't tell something about 1.2, haven't had one.

Alexandru, am I right in thinking the 1.2 has three cylinders then ?

That's correct. The 1.4 with 4 cylinders / 8 valves is an OHV, pretty old stuff. The 3 cylinder 1.2 engine is an OHC one, but in fact it might be a DOHC one, since it has 12 valves. It would make more sense this way...I'm not so sure here, maybe somebody who actually owns it can be more precise.

I'm pretty sure the 12v 1.2 is a DOHC engine.

They are pretty solid little engines.

They are a chain driven engine so no timing belt to worry about.

I would personally go for a 1.2. The 1.4 is ok but it's a very old design with a simple timing chain that goes loose and rattly. MPG and emissions are worse than the 1.2.

Hey thanks for replies everyone. I don't suppose if anyone knows of any specific engine build codes to avoid ?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Just trying to arm myself with a bit of knowledge :nerd:

If you're going for the 1.4 one, maybe you'll be as lucky as I am with the ATZ engine code.

Here are all the codes for the Fabia Mk1 engines;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0koda_Fabia

So really the engine codes you are looking for are AZQ/BME or the 6v engine AWY/BMD.

The 6v engine is pretty much the same but with lower power but pretty much the same torque.

The 6v is also only group 2 insurance so may be the one to got for.

A 1.4 TDI may also be suitable? Group 6 insurance but 60mpg and a lower tax band so the slightly extra insurance may be outweighed by the lower fuel costs.

All Silverline models have been fitted with the 1.2 12v engines.

AZQ/BME sounds good to me. I shall be starting my quest for a silverline very soon. Thanks again folks .

All Silverline models have been fitted with the 1.2 12v engines.

Not technically correct, back in 2003 there were limited runs of both the Silverline and Blackline models, both at the same time, one was obviously silver, the other black, both were based on the then soon to be superseded 1.4 OHV MPi 8v engine, based on the 1.4 Classic 5dr hatch with a "plus pack", ie electric windows, central locking and leather steering wheel and gearknob, 14" Elegance alloys and a little badge on the front wings.

In the same situation I went for the non-turbo diesel for my son as it has good torque from very low revs yet no more horesepower than the petrol 1.2 which helps with insurance. Torque is good for inexperienced drivers.

On the other hand I would not personally buy a VW gp car with chain-driven balancer shafts (most 3 cyl) as the chains can fail, taking the engine with them. Don't know how frequently this happens but you do see them coming up on ebay occasionally - "just needs a new engine."

The wife ran a 53 plate Fabia Silverline Estate and had it for 5 years, had it from new, cracking motor with a cracking 12v, 1.2 70 bhp engine.

I was talking about the 1.2 engines. It has already been stated the fact about the 1.4 versions.:)

There were no 1.2 Silverline models with 6v engines, nor diesels or 1.4 16v.

I'm 17 and have been driving for 3 months now. Cannot fault my little 1.2. Is by no means quick but it is adequate. It is very easy insured. My cover from Bell insurance for 10 months after which I get my full years no claims, with a blackbox for the first 3 months of my policy is just over £1000. That is third party but the policy is in my name.

I'd rather get a older yaris as a first car, cousin had one and that was abused but didn't need anything done was cheap to unsure and decently specd.

Why? I absolutely hammered my Fabia 1.2 6v and loved it

That's how you treat a lady !

I was going to sell my VRs but the insurance for my daughter, as a learner driver was well cheap so, hopefully that will now give me enough leverage to keep it now as her car. Unfortunately for her they don't allow car at uni so it will have to stay here for the 9 months she is away. Oh Dear isn't that a shame.

My lack lustre repair as I was in a rush, burnt through the loom and fried it all. No fault of the car :(
