High beam pattern

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm not sure my car has always been this way, but recently I have noticed a real hot spot in the pattern of high beam on the left hand side a few metres in front of the car. I have the factory Bi-Xenon lights and bulbs, so I know they do number of fancy things depending on speed, rain, etc.

Can anyone confirm this looks normal or odd?

Thanks

Is the bright / hot spot coming from the bi-xenon projector or the standard halogen high beam / flash bulb?

Is the bright / hot spot coming from the bi-xenon projector or the standard halogen high beam / flash bulb?

Good question, thanks. I will check this evening but I think its the halogen bulb, which I had tried swapping out for some 'blue' ones recently (and went back to the originals). Maybe the left one is not seated properly?

I think you have it.

The height of the main beam (halogen bulb) can be adjusted seperately to the bi-xenon projector.

I can't be 100% sure on the Superb but I imagine it will be very similar to the Octavia. In which case look out for a white nylon nut close to the main beam on the back of the headlight. Underneath this there should be a single upward facing hex nut, turning this nut adjusts the height of the main beam.

As you have replaced the bulbs recently then I'd guess that the passenger side bulb isn't seated correctly, again a common issue on the Octavia, it is very easily done and is not easily identified at the point of fitting, mainly due to the lack of visibility.

Just as a warning as you have bi-xenons you should not attempt to adjust the dipped headlights manually as it first needs to be put into 'learn mode' using VCDS, otherwise it is possible to adjust them beyond the self-levelling parameters which can cause damage so be sure what does what before making any adjustments.

Ive got a similar problem...bulb was sitting correctly but....the halogen highbeam filament was in wrong position...pointing down...dealer took whole heaflight off and fixed it...they were ready to replace the whole unut until they found a solution...have Superb II FL. Tere's no adjustment screw to set the highbeam filament height.

Holding the bulb in flush/square while also putting the bent wire 'clip' on is really tricky. You need two small hands, and can't see what you are doing, so you need to memorise how the clip works.

Yep...a bit tricky☺ my friends BMW headlight bulb wasn't inserted correctly and melted the housing...

I would prefer some more illumination directly in front of my car on low beam, the present set up illumantes a lot of the left pavement area, heck I am not a kerb crawler.

Maybe its just my eyes not keeping up with my age,or something like that.

That is definitely the passenger side halogen mainbeam bulb that isn't fitted correctly. You can see it's a warm white spot on the ground rather than a xenon white. Just remove the headlight cover and reposition the halogen bulb into the correct position. It took me two or three attempts on each of mine when i replaced the OEM halogen mainbeam with Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited bulbs the other week.

Noticed after i posted that you had confirmed it was the bulb that wasn't seated correctly.... :)

Thanks for that. I was going to buy some Osram Nightbreakers. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of your beam pattern with these installed? I was disappointed with the Bosch Xenon blues. Cheers, Matt

I'm on nights this week so I'll try and remember to get some pics for you and post them on this thread.

Here is the beam with the bulb seated correctly. I'd be interested in seeing someone else's beam pattern to see how they compare, as the hot spot on the left is still too dipped IMO. 2942p7t.jpg

Hi,

can someone tell me how to change the lowbeam bulb, the car has halogen lights

Are you sure that the bulb is definitely in the correct position as that looks exactly the same as before. If you look at the other bulb and then take a look at the passenger side one do they both look like they are seated correctly? It took me around four attempts to get mine in the correct position when clamped in place.

I fear you are right, it looked better from in the car but in the photo its not much better if any. Will have another go tonight.

Just a thought...

The Xenons are auto-levelling. Just before I traded in my Superb II it almost failed the last MOT because the beam(s) would not align correctly.

They told me the nearside beam was below the acceptable level.

It seemed the nearside alignment motor was "sticking" and it looked like a replacement unit was going to be needed.

Fortunately they did a software reset of the headlamp control unit in the workshop and that fixed it (and it passed the MOT).

And another thought...

You haven't inadvertently switched on Travel Mode in the Maxidot, as that would change the nearside beam pattern.

Thanks for that. The hot spot is definitely from the halogen (non moving high beam). I've yet to observe the lights at speed on the open road, but with all the lighting options (and subsequent movement/focusing required by the Xenon system) a failure of this scares me!

It still looks like the bulb not seated correctly to me (Having had the same issue in the last month myself) as it is definitely the halogen bulb not the xenon.

I tried to get some pictures of my beam pattern on mainbeam tonight on my way in to work but it was very misty again so couldn't get it done this evening. I'll try again later in the week for you. ;)

Not the best of pictures but I took a couple of pics for you tonight. Taken in the countryside so totally pitch black. There is a wall along the left side of the road hence the slightly strange looking effect on the main beam picture... Looks like it's been cropped etc.....

Dipped beam....

And main beam (xenon & Nightbreaker Unlimiteds)....

I have the same problems with my S2 FL.... and YES.. Both H7 bulbs (its H7 on FL) is seated correctly.

Philips X-tremevison 130% bulbs. The left and right halogen beam is to low.. I tried everything. Set the lights in adjustment mode in VCDS.. Adjust correctly and then learned the adjustment... But same problem. And I can't find a separate adjustment know/screw for the highbeam eiether...

It looks like projector is moving (main beam) different than the high beam reflector, but the high beam reflector is also adjusted up and down... :S

Maybe a adaption in VCDS 55 headlight range module will solve this? :)

Guys....drive near the wall and see are the all beam pattern equally aimed...I had the same problem...dealer took the headlight completely off and under the headlight (as they said) was some kind of adjustment screw for the halogen highbeam adjustment..(superb 2014 FL)

Hmmm strange I cant see either...but that what they said to me and and they fix it...they were ready to change the whole unit until they found a solution...maybe inside unit is some kind of adjustment knob...there is not much room to see whats in there...but dealer problably know how to fix this...
