Oil recommendations

Featured Replies

Age old topic I'm sure.. been reading through search for a while to make sure I'm getting the right stuff.

Robert Eardly has serviced the vehicle it's whole life, and on all the service sheets, it indicates Shell Helix 5w/40 has been used.

Last service was VW, where they've popped in the Quantum Platinum.

I'm not fussed which one I use.. they both seem to be similar priced.. Obviously the own brand is specifically designed for that engine spec - so might be worth a punt!

Where do you guys get your oil from? Are either that I've mentioned a good shout?

Cheers for your help! And patience considering its an age old topic :-)

My 1.4 mpi likes liqui moly mos2 10w40. It's a good oil imho.

If its a VRS I'm not sure the Shell oil is 505.01 rated, i.e not suitable and could cause premature camshaft wear?

The quantum is dealer stuff.  Take a look at Rainworth Skoda, they sell it at less than the retail.  Roughly £30 I think i paid last time?

All fecking oil is good as long as it meets or exceeds the manufacturer's spec.

People get so precious about oil but it REALLY doesn't make any difference, check the spec. then buy the cheapest. It's not rocket science.

It's not - it's only 505.00! Slightly worrying! It doesn't detail Shell on the invoices.. just says PDOIL Helix 5W/40 - which I'm presuming is the Shell stuff?

She runs fine - is it worth getting anything checked over.. it's first 53k and 7 services were all using this oil.

Make sure you replace it and the filter at 6-10.000miles and your car will be as good as new.

Just out of interest.. I've got a bit of an oily smell on hard acceleration.

She's not burning any oil.. paranoid myself after a long journey yesterday.m found a couple of VRS'S on my journeys and enjoyed a brisk ride with them!

Upon removal of oil filler cap - there's a few wisps of smoke.. doesn't smell at all! No moisture in there whatsoever and she's running fine.

Is the breather pipe off the top of cam cover connected to the turbo intake pipe?

If not someone's probably done the elephant mod(elephant bodge imo) and this can cause oily smells.

Another common culprit is the cam cover gasket leaking slightly, the oil runs onto the exhaust manifold and smells more the hotter it gets ;)

If your boost pipes seals are as mine; the oil vapor may be escaping, flowing down the back of engine and onto the exhaust - creating that nice oily smell in the cabin as well.

Unfortunately this is best seen from under the car.
