Help - Fabia VRS - Metalic 'snap' sound, no power still idles?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Long time forum reader, first time poster! Really hoping someone can help me out with this.

I was pulling onto the M6 last night, on the slip road I put my foot down to get some speed up.  I heard a kind of metalic snap sound, its really hard to explain, it happened very quickly.  I hit the clutch straight away fearing catastrophe and pulled on to the hard shoulder.  Stopped the car and was really suprised to see the engine was idling, I switched it off.  Had a look under the bonnet but couldnt see anything at all, no warning lights even.  Thought it might have been something I ran over so wanting to get away from the hard shoulder I started the engine again  It idled ok so went to drive away and there was zero power, engine just seemed to bog down.

Waited for 2 hours for RAC, he didnt have a clue, plugged in his diagnostic thingy, nothing!  he tried to drive it and said it felt terrible and would need towing home, when he drove it on the truck there was a cloud of white smoke.  I realise that if something has gone wrong inside, all the starting and trying to drive it has probably made it worse but what could I do, he wouldn't of taken me home without trying it first :|

My car is a 2006 Fabia VRS 1.9 tdi BLT engine, it has done 82k miles and has been very well looked after and serviced etc.

The cambelt was changed 3 weeks ago and it was serviced then also.

I'm thinking turbo related but my mate thinks the cambelt might have slipped (?)

Thanks for any help!!!

Cambelts don't just 'slip', it sounds very much like your turbo has failed, whip off the TIP and have a look, pull the impeller, it should not move freely, if it does the shaft may have snapped.

Sounds like a failed turbo to me as well.

Turbo to me. White smoke is burning oil.

It sounds roughly like what happened to mine...

Like with your car this happened soon after cambelt replacement and while accelerating. The rubber pulley that the cambelt goes on had disintegrated. My car wouldn't run afterwards once I turned it off, but with a new belt and pulley it's back on the road.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I got a tow to the local garage who did the cam belt and they are going to look at it for me.  Its really strange, the engine definately sounds noisier than normal almost as if the exhaust is blowing.  I'm sure it's turbo related but I'm suprised that the car barely moves without it!?

Car has been fixed!!!

The pipe from the bottom of the intercooler had come away, it's been re-attached and a self tapping screw put in for good measure.

Garage did it for free, which is a total win :)
