Only foglight on when lights are on

Featured Replies

Hi all, originally posted this in wrong section, so if you have read it already, my apologies.

When I have the lights on the only light burning on the rear is the fog light.  Every other light is working fine, but the tail lights are out, and the fog light is on.

I have checked the bulbs and they all seem ok, tail light bulbs are twin filament 21w x 5w. I am at a loss as to what it could be. Someone suggested it may be the switch itself, is this a common fault?

Any suggestions as to what I could check next would be appreciated.

Thank you

Eddie

Is the fog light on without it actually being switched on?

Hi Lee, the fog light on the rear comes on when I switch the lights on. no tail lights, just the rear fog light....   Headlights work fine, as does the front fogs when I switch them on.

Hope this helps

Have any bulbs been changed? I ask because the correct bulbs are actually 12 volt, 21/4 watt and they have offset pins. When I got my car someone had stuffed the wrong bulbs in it.

Or, it may be an earthing problem, normal cause on most vehicles.

Yeah, or possibly the switch.

I wondered about the bulbs, but although they are 21w x 5w, they are offset pins like the one pictured above. I will buy the correct bulbs for it just on the off chance that's causing it, but I am doubtful.

The switch is a possibility, I have vague recollections of someone having a similar issue on a golf, I think its the same switch gear.

If its an earth issue, is there any quick way to find it?

Cheers

The earths on the rear lights are brown wires. If you run a piece of wire from a bare metal part of the car and touch it on each brown wire at the light clusters while the lights are turned on, you should find the dodgy earth if there is one. Only touch the brown wires though or you will blow a fuse.

Do your reverse lights work ?

  • Author

Thanks for that Lee..... too dark to have a go tonight, but will get on it in the morning.

Yes Alexandru, reversing lights working as they should.

Not taking well to this fault as the wee Fabia has been bulletproof up until now..... Its a true trooper!

Cheers

Folks

IMHO, if the reverse lights are working and you also get the back fog light, your grounding should be good. No brake lights also ?

Fuses all ok?

  • Author

Fuses all ok, bulbs replaced for correct ones, earths checked, all ok.  Managed to get them working correctly just by messing about with them, I did have the surround off the dash from around the Headlight switch at the time. Every light working as it should then pushed the lights back into place and the nearside bulb popped. Replaced this, then checked two 5w fuses again, cant get the light to come back on. Interestingly when you shove a bulb into the nearside light the wrong way round, it works although its very bright.

Really confused now!

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Eddie
