Hi all,

New to forums in general, this is my third Skoda I'm just wondering if I've made a fatal mistake by buying the 2.0tdi rather than the 1.9tdi? Any information or insults welcome!

Cheers Andy

Hi Andy and welcome to Briskoda. Do you have a MKI or a MKII?

Ok. There are issues with the oil pump in the PD140 engine, in which the drive shaft can fail so a complete loss of oil pressure is the result and the issue with water ingress into the passenger footwell, which was carried over from the B5 Passat upon which the Superb was based - yes, no one understands why they didn't apply the fix on the line, but there we are.....

We've had both the oil pump and the water ingress problems in our MKI, resulting in much downtime and cost to get them rectified. We still love the car, hence that's why we've kept it, even though we purchased a MKII last year. The rear sensors are also pretty hopeless and fail, and they are costly to replace. Is it a "fatal" mistake you've made, well, no, I don't believe anyone has actually died as a result of these problems - Vauxhall has come much closer to that recently with the Zafira B combusting - but many say the 140 is a lemon engine... Look in the Superb MKI section for a lot more information on both these problems.

Hello Truzzi  :hi:

As a frequenter of the Mk1 Superb Forum until relatively recently, our friend who can't feel his head ^^^ has typed what I'd have typed almost verbatim.

There's plenty of reading to do on the subject.  A stitch (or two - water ingress) in time could save you several 9's.

Yes, I agree. Really must make sure the pollen filter is checked and if the mod has not been completed, its done ASAP.. Unfortunately, the only way to preempt the oil pump failure would be to remove and replace it, and I'm thankful that ours has been replaced with the revised oil pump with a solid shaft 20k ago, along with a new turbo and all the other associated gubbins.

However, there are numerous poor designs and weaknesses with all marques affecting many of their models, so whatever one buys, there will be bringers of doom, stating this and that is awful. I tend to concentrate on what one likes, enjoys about it and what the car does well. Just my view....
