Dangerous Roads

Featured Replies

Because Yeti is such a good 4WD I'm using that as an excuse for putting it here -

www.dangerousroads.org. (hope this attempt at a link works)

Australia - McKillop Bridge......we did it in an MX5 about 10 years ago.

Then there's France ....not to mention South America.

Did my link work?

I doubt it.

I'm the old fashioned type that prefers to read and ponder at my own (slow) pace.

It worked but it's upside down in the UK................no sorry I lied, link didn't work

But as its been moved out of the Yeti section by an over zealous moderator I will no longer see that thread as I don't have time to peruse the whole forum :S

There are NO dangerous roads.

It's drivers who drive like complete kn0b heads that make them dangerous

That's not correct unless the smiley faces are showing that it's your idea of a joke.

100% correct

As soon as I read title to this thread that was going to be what I wrote

A road is never dangerous

A road has never killed anyone

That's not correct unless the smiley faces are showing that it's your idea of a joke.

What makes a road dangerous ?

Does a road take control of the pedals or wheel?

Does the ever change the drivers attitude ?

Or is a road in fact just a surface to which we drive on?

It's got to be more dangerous driving on a 10' wide unmade "bumpy" road with no barriers and a 1000' vertical drop than to drive on any "normal" road in the UK as ANY mistake is likely to be fatal.

Or do you not know or care about risks?

Totally care about risks

HOWEVER

At no point would i be putting myself and or others at RISK by driving above and beyond my driving capabilities or to the road i am driving on.

As stated there no such a thing as a dangerous road

ANY road can be either dangerous or safe depends on how you drive/what you drive.

You are having a play on words.

Simple answer yes or no. Is it more dangerous driving on the road mentioned above (a 10' wide unmade "bumpy" road with no barriers and a 1000' vertical drop) than any main road in the UK?

Both of those roads are potential dangerous depends how you drive on them

Would i drive a 7.5T truck on the top road with 3 bald tyres while eating a subway no i would not

Would i drive a suitable 4x4/quad bike with all the correct gear and knowledge yes i would

Nither of them roads are going to make you crash and burn

You tell me what makes ANY road dangerous

Yes, the mountain road will be much more dangerous to drive on, irrespective of attitude or driving skill. Mainly because of the risk of rocks falling on you from above.

Apart from the occasional disenchanted teenager standing on a bridge with a brick, that risk is almost zero on the second road pictured.

In general I agree too, but there are exceptions like when roads collapse etc. Seen it happen in middle of summer with a vehicle stationary in traffic on an A road, driver lived had to be cut out. Another with a tractor on an A road stationary about 200 meters from temp traffic lights with no work within 400 meters being carried out, road started to subside, just not as rapidly and driver with nowhere to go, got out and watched it slowly end up more or less on it's side. Road itself was dangerous in those instances, nothing the drivers could have done. Falling rocks, landslides and tree falls are also things that I would consider making a dangerous road, while it could be argued they are not the road itself but the falling article(s), I view it as if they exist with a possible fall radius covering the carriageway, that it's all one and the same as part of the road environment itself. 99.9% of incidents on the road are likely avoidable and down to human input decisions, but with certain roads presenting more hazardous than others and humans being imperfect retards when behind the wheel..... I can accept someone calling a road dangerous based on the fact that their careful and competent driving self are not the only driver on it.

The thread had nothing to do with the Yeti hence why I moved it... so all the Briskoda members could see it.

thank you, interesting article and despite owning a Yeti I don't look there very often....

Before we get the usual reports that it's not Yeti specific  :dull:

Maybe you haven't heard of rockfalls or land slips to start with.

Again that's not the road tho is it?

ANY thing can be classed as dangerous

Planes falling from the sky on to the m62

Wild animals running on to the road

All these things are dangerous

But the road it's self isn't

Maybe not the road to M&S

But there are declared roads throughout the world NOT on the AA atlas of GB.

I doubt if many Brits have a significant problem with rock falls, land slips destabilised by the odd earth tremor or recent heavy seasonal rain such as depicted.

re post #17 - top photo reminds me of a certain section( Glenfinnan -Lochailort) of the A830 almost 60 years ago .but it was only wide enough for little more than one car.

Then #18 - I remember  circa 1990, being held up outside Reading ,heading on the ( I think) A329(M) ,to find a tailback, with a radio flash of tar Melted by hot sun on Hard Shoulder/L1

#23- planes on M1(kegworth ,circa 1990). Also common hazard on roads near Colwich and in Glencoe - deer of all sizes. Agreed, they are small compared to a large Roo/Camel , but hit one ,or even a sheep with average car, and it's possibly write off tie for car, and possibly damage to occupants

#24- "rock falls" - not many Brits, I agree, but "Landslide shuts road" is becoming more common  ,in the UK, especially up north, where the ground is boggy and the rock is hard.
