How to remove engine cover and filter box

Featured Replies

Quick questions...

How do you remove engine cover on vRS? Do I just pull hard or what? Having no Haynes is a real pain !:(

Also how is the air filter box lower half attached to the car? At the front is a rubber mounting, but whats at a the back? It looks like a rubber grip thingy on a metal pin mounting. I have a strut brace and to change air filter I need to rock the bottom half forward so that the top half clears the strut. Can I do this without breaking something?

On the front edge of the cover, lift it vertically upwards as there are two (ball and socket?) type joints on the left and right to release. After that just pull the cover towards you and it will slide off.

There is one bolt at the front right of the airbox and a big lump of rubber at the back, undo the bolt and give it a good tug it will come out.

Fit the stut AFTER you change the air filter!!

Too right! I've still got the scars wher I tried to be clever and leave the strut in place

Thanks for the help chaps.

I was thinking of the future. I really dont want to have to remove the strut brace every time I want to check the filiter. Now that I know the air box is easy to tilt forward, getting the air box top off is quite easy too. ... well easier than changing the clutch on a mini (original one) without taking the engine out !

Hi, thought I'd revive this thread. Has anyone ever removed the air filter box from an SDI before? I've got most of the bits and pieces out but there seems to be a final attachment at the back of the lower half of the filter case that keeps it in there. Anyone know what I'm on about? Do I just yank this out?

It's too awkward even to take a picture of.

I'm only doing it cos I had some free silicone grease and time and I was gonna try sort out this clunking by greasing up the gearbox mount. I'm amazed at how complicated they made it to remove the battery box tho!

Doh!,

found it. I had to yank it straight up! I was trying to pull the other way. It felt like I was on the krypton factor for a bit there tho. :D

:OI managed to drop a screw down the side, dropped off magnetised phillips

screwdriver and got wedged beyond reach.. :banghead:

I prefer to drop a socket when trying to remove the strutbrace for air filter cleaning. :D:D:D

Never did manage to recover it and it isn't visible any more so i'm assuming it parted company with my car somewhere shortly afterwards along the M1 / M18 on the way to / from work.

Cheers

Dave.
