Weird engine fault

Featured Replies

Have a really weird difficult fault on my Fabia, its a 2001, 1.4 16V Estate the car was in to a local garage to have some new Tyres and suspension work done. They took it out to check the tracking and make sure the wheel was straight and it cut out and wouldn't start.

Having towed it back the diagnostics showed a manifold pressure sensor was duff. So they replaced it. Car started was happily ticking over, then suddenly cut out again. No fault being registered. It's still doing it even with it's second replacement sensor as it was thought it might be the first replacement which was faulty. It starts runs perfectly from cold, reaches about normal temperature and stops, won't start until it's cooled off again.

The management light is on, but this mean nothing, it's been on for 3 years now, so it's ignored. (Think that's the EGR valve)

Really struggling with this as I don't really want to loose the car, but can't justify putting more and more money into it.

Is your engine the AUB or the BBZ (look on the sticker in the boot under the carpet)?

Don't know can't get to it at the moment. I believe it's the 100bhp version, though to be fair it performs more like 75 in my mind.

Does that make a difference, should I find out do you think?

Only the automatics were 75 BHP, if it's manual it's 100 BHP.

AUB has a single coil pack and HT leads, BBZ has individual coil packs on each cylinder.

It's manual, so will be the 100hp, pretty sure it has coil packs.

In that case it's a BBZ, and the engine is stalling as soon as it tries to go closed loop which suggest the precat lambda probe has failed, replace the ECT sensor first since it's cheap and easy to do.

Right, thanks I've let them know expect they will try that next.

It stops at 62 degrees  C by the way

Judging by what's listed in ETKA, AUA and BBY-code (75bhp) engines might be fitted with manual gearbox in Fabias, but I guess the UK market may not have had these?

I'd go with coolant temperature sensor too, as the later engines certainly seem to go closed-loop really soon after start-up, like 30 seconds, according to some logs I've looked at on my BBY (Polo).

Coolant temperature sensor didn't work, so Lamda probe on order.......... getting expensive this.
