Thought these may be of interest to fellow nerds :)

 

You can see the air-water chargecooler (the large alloy box at the front of the engine) , that replaces the traditional FMIC....

Looks like it has it's own coolant circuit and radiator at front of car.

It's a shame to see Skoda still fitting low-spec batteries to their cars. Thought they'd learnt their lesson.

 

68A 680A, at least it's a VARTA though.

 

The VARTA E44 at 77Ah and 780A is a much better battery.

wow... i was going to same the same thing... my E60 battery is a 110ah 900A.

Battery...this car has the factory towbar fitted (not sure if that uprates the battery or not...) 

 

Since you've got the factory towbar fitted, do you know if it has the full wiring for a caravan including the fridge?

 

That would be an ignition switched live to pin 10 and an earth to pin 11.

I removed the cover for the pics.

Was a bit surprised by the battery spec, especially as the towbar is supposed to come with uprated electrical system (or whatever the wording in the brochure was). Plus it's loaded with front & rear heated seats, heated screen, heated nozzles etc etc.

Also - I think the black metal enclosure to the right of the battery is the engine ECU? Seems to be fitted with security bolts where the heads have sheared off.

If the battery produces enough Cold Cranking Amps for long enough then the charging system can run everything you want does the total size of the battery matter?

 

The smaller the battery the less you have to drag around, this one has AGM on it and if it's anything like the AGM Odessey I had on one of my bikes it will be bulletproof.

 

Spec ing smaller batteries is an easy way to save weight I'v put a Lithium on my Guzzi now and when I first got it I thought the box was empty.

I was just going to link the above link ref AGM batteries.

BMWs have bigger batteries because of the power drawn by the car. My X6 draws just on 62A without the engine running and only the IDrive system running! Silly amount of power draw.

Plus the big crank of turning over a 6 cylinder engine :D

Those that have experience of the MkII Superb will know the standard batteries that Skoda fit are weak.

 

Plenty of failures within warranty.

 

Whilst not all failures are the fault of the car or battery there are too many threads for it to be simply down to user neglect.

My guess is that it helps reduce emissions.

 

With the traditional intercooler setup, there's a long inlet air tract pipework from turbo at rear of engine, all the way to the front of the car, through the large intercooler, then all the way back to the inlet manifold. That increases lag when the turbo is spooling up.

To get the turbo to spool up, the ECU injects more fuel - the more lag, the longer it's overfuelling.

In pre-DPF days, if you watched the exhaust of a car in a high gear at low (off-boost) RPM while it tried to accelerate and the turbo was spooling, you'd always get smoke as the turbo started to spool. That was definitely the case on PD engine anyway. These days it's probably still happening but the DPF hides it all...

So my theory is that the water-air chargecooler results in a much shorter inlet tract, to reduce lag and therefore emissions/soot.

Regarding Battery...

 

I have ordered a Towbar which as part of the prep states a bigger battery... will be interesting to see how much bigger.

My 190 has the exact same battery as in muddy boots photo. (no tow bar fitted)

I think roughly translated it means "We'll make this vague sweeping statement to make it sound like you are getting more than just a tow bar so we can justify ripping you off on the accessory price" ;)

Agree, hence why i went factory fit rather than retro fit 3rd party.

 

The Audi A4 and A6, some of them engines required the said upgrades, maybe its just a firmware upgrade which opens the themosats earlier when electrics hooked up, IBS charging profile changed and stage one fans ? who knows!!!

 

Not impressed about the battery as that one piece i expected to see upgraded to a standard car

I'll only be towing a garden trailer so that's why I didn't fork out €700 for the factory one. It was €350 for the factory fitted tow-bar in my Mark 2 Superb Combi. Why the big mark up??

If mine was not a lease car i would of done the same (think i created a thread in fact) but i didnt want to get into the situation of lets say an engine issue and them blaming that.
