Nerdy pics of 150 engine bay

Changing tack slightly (but still on-topic to the OP :) ) - how does an air/water charge cooler work? Does it have a separate cooling circuit to the rest of the engine? I can't see that pumping water that's been thoroughly warmed by the engine past the inbound air is going to do much for intake temperatures, even if it has taken a trip through the radiator first. Water temperature gauges frequently indicate temps in the 90 deg C range.

Yes it has it's own coolant circuit.

Have a read of the doc linked to a couple of posts up, it describes how it works in there.

Page 26 of that pdf.   Interesting.

So there's a target minimum charge air temperature, below which the liquid coolant of that circuit isn't pumped, then at higher intake temps the flow rate of the pump for this circuit is modulated according to how far above target the intake air temp is.  Clever stuff.  Also gives a way of preventing the charge air from being too cool, and risking condensation/freezing of carried moisture (look up 'intercooler icing' if you think I'm making this up, big issue in North American market, presumably because of tighter emissions regs/higher EGR use).

Wonder if there's an expansion tank for the separate coolant circuit....

Interesting read - thank you. I'd be interested to see what temperature drop figures they claim for that set up, plotted against ambient. Could something like VCDS read the sensor temperature figures up/downstream of the charge cooler?

I expect so; I would have a look but I rarely get to drive it as it's the wife's car !

Thanks. Was hopeful it might've been over here. When I asked our local dealer if they'd got a petrol Superb in you'd have thought I'd asked to see pictures of his Gran naked given the response I got...

Have you tried looking on Autotrader to see if anyone near you has a 1.4 demonstrator for sale? I've just had a quick look and found a 1.4 hatch in Worcester

Please can anyone tell me the function of the device bottom left with three hoses connected to it. I'm just starting to try and find my way round under the bonnet of my Octy3 2.0 TDI 150

I'm completely new to the VAG group of cars and not seen anything like this on my fords.

TIA

Fuel filter I think.

Ah Thanks! It was the three hoses that took me away from that thought. I'm also used to plastic ones rather than the "brick out house" appearance of this one.

Maybe excess fuel from the pump is returned to the filter via a third hose and that makes it likely to be a high pressure device hence the metal construction.

I need to find a tutorial/guided tour round this engine bay. I've always done my own servicing of filters, brakes etc but it is getting harder and harder these days. I might have to give in.
