Superb- Rear Seatbelts

Featured Replies

On my superb, all the rear seatbelts lock when fully extended. The problem is that the belt has to be unbuckled and returned before it unlocks, otherwise you end up with the belt tightening up as you move and throttling you.

My local dealer have spoken to skoda who say it is designed to do this for baby seats, and it cannot be stopped.

The problem I have is my daughter and wife getting throttled everytime they put their belts on.

Deos anyone elses Superb do this??

I am not sure when you say lock when fully extended.

Can you be a little more precise in your description, I might be able to offer our exploits in return.

the rear belts are on a ratchet system as when they are pulled out they go back on a ratchet ie if you breathe in when the belt retracts it locks into posttion and won't undo this ratchet mechanismn untill belt is fully retracted (not much good when a adult is pinned to the seat) all the rear belts on the superb's do this and the centre belt on octavia's very annoying but is ment for childs with not enough body weight to activate the "proper belt locking"

My kids havent complained yet...and I hadnt noticed myself.

So the belts strangle you? Interesting safety feature... ;)

not exactly strangle you but pin you in your seat

So a tight-hold then?

Better than the alternative of flying forward!

Well I never did.........

Just walked back up the garden from the garage to check this seatbelt thingy...and low and behold mine does it.But seeing as I am never likely to fully extend the seatbelt this feature is wasted on me.

But a nice touch though I think.

Yeah, I noticed this when putting in a child seat which is anchored by the seat belt.

You have to take care because you reel out most of the belt to anchor the child seat. On the other hand, you know that once its locked then the child seat won't move.

The only other problem is reaching the child in the seat from the passenger seat in the front since they are so far away.

I have noticed this on my Superb, but not when the children are using the seatbelts, only with adults.

It seems to start happening somewhere between half and three quarters of the belt being reeled out. If after this point, you stop, then you have to reel it back in quite a way before it unlocks.

I can understand the idea for child seats, but the superb is not the sort of car many young families are going to buy.

Also the belt seems to strangle my rear seat passengers to the point where they want to take the belt off therefore defeating the object of seat belts saving lives.

The belt deosn't stop when the passenger is held in tight, any slight movement causes the belt to continue to tighten.

This sounds like a significant problem for owners which Skoda UK needs to be aware of and address. Perhaps complaints to supplying dealers and to Customer Service are in order? (With apologies to LadyLoki, although she may be able to help our Superb owners by alerting the Technical Department to customers' concerns).
