DSG gearbox changing up gears early?

Featured Replies

My 6 months old 170 Dsg estate has started changing up to 5th around 30mpg and is into 6th before 40mpg under light acceleration and is labouring as a result. Anyone else had this issue? I'm thinking it probably needs a gearbox software re load.

6 months old? would that be a MK3?

Obvious question, was it like this before?

Either way mine changes up very early and can labour slightly if you push a bit much on the pedal

Let me know how you get on

With a light throttle my car has always changed up at the speeds and gears you state. Close to 32mph into 5th and 38mph into 6th.

Mine does this too, changes up very early on light throttle

Drive it more aggressively and it will learn what you want.  After my partner has had my car for a week I need to teach it how to behave again.

I am going to do the full reset with vagcom to see if it will still change up so early.. nothing to lose I guess

My DSG Golf R in Eco or normal mode is virtually the same, it is in 5th about 36mph and 6th as it hits 41/42mph.

So seems normal across the VAG DSG range.

Thanks for the replies I've driven it 26k since end of May but the labouring only seems to have come in since the first service last month. It's uncomfortable to drive around town and I tend to use sport mode for this reason ,even on long stretches of 50mph motorway.

Sounds right. The DSG is programmed towards economy in D. In mine it changes into 5th at around 34mph-ish and 6th around 42mph on a light throttle.

I've never felt it a problem though. Just be gentle with the throttle and it will pulls itself along nicely. If you're wanting to accelerate then an extra bit of pressure on the throttle will force a down change or two so the engine isn't laboured.

It could be the dealer did a DSG software update during the service, or as it learnt your driving style over the first 26k miles they reset it back to basic factory settings, so now it feels different.

Whenever my last DSG went in for a service I always asked for it to be reset as I found it smoothed it out again.

It's definitely not the same car since the service, I'm thinking they did do a software update which has messed it up. It really does labour along for 5mph before down changing under heavier acceleration.

Mine is often in 6th as low as about 37mph
