Lights, in and out.

Featured Replies

Alright guys. I've had my car just over a week now. I've had the windows tinted, the grille wrapped and pressed plates fitted. I've also done a few VCDS mods.

I'm after replacing the interior and exterior lighting next.

What bulbs have you all fitted to your interiors? I haven't got footwell lighting and I've already spotted some nice SKODA logo puddle lights.

I want to replace the standard D2S xenons with something brighter and a longer beam, I'll be replacing the sidelights to match too. What do you guys recommend?

Also after any recommendations for number plate and reverse lights.

You don't get many people wanting to upgrade the standard xenon headlights, they are usually pretty good, especially next to the standard halogens.

I didn't think the Blackline got xenon's from the factory?

I'm not sure if they come from the factory with xenons but mine is definitely a blackline and is definitely fitted with xenons. If I put my reg into www.autobulbsdirect.com it tells me my headlight is a xenon D2S bulb.

I find the standard bulbs are bright but I want a brighter whiter light.

Don't forget about other cars. If you fit too bright lights then don't be surprised when other drivers somehow start to switch to high beams.

It's common thing against some home installed xenons that usually are poorly fitted and it's more than annoying to other road users.

Home installed xenons look **** because they're fitted into reflector headlights that aren't made for xenons.

I've got proper xenons that will have brighter bulbs in correctly levelled lights. So won't dazzle folk.

most oem bulbs are 4300k or 5k at a push. if you have factory xenons they are as white as youll get. the white /ultimately bluer light you go the less lumens output you get so your light projection is reduced. i think most folks would be more than happy with factory xenons. maybe try some new bulbs as if ones fitted are abit tired the output is reduced.

Nfisher, as the car is new to you it's entirely possible the previous owner has fitted an aftermarket HID kit.

The MK2 FL has projector lights rather than reflector so it's not obvious if it's factory or not. There are a couple of easy ways to check aside from removing the headlights.

- Do you have washers jets under the lights, if not, they aren't factory fit.

- Do you have a height adjustment control next to the instrument dimmer (left of the headlight switch), if you do, they aren't factory fit.

- When you connected VCDS, was there a module 55 Xenon range, if not, they aren't factory fit.

I also believe that the FL takes a D1S not a D2S bulb.

In regards to the other lights, I assume you're wanting to fit LED versions?

Can't offer any advice for the interior, I think most LED's are too harsh so I've stuck to halogen. There are plenty of kits on eBay that should include all the necessary bulbs and it's pretty easy to add footwell lighting if you desire.

As for the number plate and reverse, I have the following fitted:

You might find you need load resistors.

As the above states. Front is a D2S. Factory fitted Xenons.

Another few Octavias, I nearly purchased the black Blackline all these are 2012 and have factory fitted Xenons with no washers. Early Xenons didn't have to have washers and self levellers.

Sorry but you're wrong, as is that website.

All the cars you've attached have halogen projectors.

A FL MK2 with factory xenons will look like the image below, notice it has both a washer jet and a small notch on the projector. If it is missing these it is NOT a factory xenon fit.

It's a five minute job to remove the headlight on a FL MK2 and check for yourself.

Just for complete clarity

FL MK2 with factory xenons

You can see it has a ballast and control module for AFS (moves the light left/right), there is also a picture of the D1S bulb for the dipped beam. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/137938-do-you-have-a-fl-octavia-xenons/?p=1727259

FL MK2 with factory halogens

There is a video here which shows the standard halogen light for the FL MK2 and how to remove it, this shows the H7 bulb used for dipped beam. It's also missing both the ballast and control module shown in the other link.

Mine has Xenon with the washers etc. I will be looking to upgade the full beam bulbs to better options - Probably Philips Xtreme Vision +130%

I also want some white LED number plate bulbs in the near future.

Iirc all factory fit xenons must have a levelling and washer system fitted on all makes and models. Bar a few exceptions

I stand corrected and apologise for my ignorance before. I was wrong. Had a bulb go this morning took it out. H7.

**** thing, thought I had xenons.

Excellent, glad that's cleared up :)

The easiest option to give a little more light are 'uprated' H7 bulbs such as the Osram Nightbreaker or Philips XtremeVision. They don't seem to last as long as standard bulbs but should help.

I would advise against fitting a H7 HID conversion kit. The BCM in the FL MK2 can be very sensitive and it's likely to fry itself, if you go down this route you should put £200 to one side just in case. It also won't be legal despite the cut off being MOT worthy.

You can also fit quality bi xenons units inside the headlight housing. This will give a great beam pattern and cut off but still won't be legal without the additional of washers and levelling system. Xpower did the first part with awesome results: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/262148-octavia-vrs-custom-bi-xenon-projector-conversion/

Final option is to retrofit genuine xenons along with the washers and levelling system. This will be very expensive unless you find a friendly scrapyard with all the bits you need, you'll also gain AFS so the headlights will turn left and right as you drive.

I've bought Osram Nightbreakers earlier today. I had them in my Leon too. Good bulb.

I tried a H7 HiD conversion kit in my Leon too, it was awful. Very very bright but awful beam pattern and started to mess with the electronics of the car too. A few times I had to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU as the light out warning, wouldn't go away even with standard bulbs. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
