headlight washer jets

Featured Replies

Had my VRS combo for two months and its awesome!

The one thing that is doing my head in is the amount of times I've had to top up the washer fluid; is there anyway to turn the washer jets off? They seem to be the only clean thing on the car at the moment due to the amount of times they get washed during the day!

I think as std they activate every 3-4 washes. This can be altered with VCDS. I've altered my washers to every 10.

As standard it's every 10, as stated in the owners manual.

That resets though when you turn the car off?

The headlamp washer count I believe resets upon ignition cycle...also if you physically turn the headlamps off then on again via the switch.

I have an Octavia and Golf GTD with headlamp washers.....I have noticed the Golfs use far less washer fluid....the two stage cycle being far shorter and quicker too. I dont know whether it is coded slightly differently or perhaps has different hardware (a more powerful helical pump)?

The Octavia can do a tank of fluid in a few days....worst case the Golf can last two to three weeks before the warning comes on....far longer in better weather.

Yeah that's what I've been noticing, especially during this dismal weather at the moment. Will have a hunt on eBay for a cheap VCDS; just a shame you can't turn off the washer jets from the centre console

I know its impractical when dark but during daylight hours I tend to turn my lights off from auto whilst I clean the screen to ensure they dont go off....turn auto back on immediately afterwards.

It does help.

One thing that is quite good is that as soon as the low level warning is triggered the headlamp washers deactivate to prevent damage to the high pressure helical pumps used to operate them.....from that point there is there or thereabouts 1/1.5 litres of screenwash left and it does tend to last a while.

I had my warning on in the golf for a week or two and still had wash left before I topped it up.

I'm a bit baffled that this is even an issue to be honest. From experience. I've had my Octy since end of August. I've had to top my washer reservoir up once in that time. Just once. I have a VRS. It has xenons. But I'm wondering just how often some of you guys are washing your screens. I've done over 3k in since owning the car, but haven't felt the need to "wash" the screen that often as I have either washed the car, or its raining. Lights set to auto and it must reset as every time I wash my screen, the lights are also washed on the first activation. But I'm never washing it 10 times in one journey to reactivate the headlight jets. You guys driving behind a lot of tractors? Ha ha!!

I live hundreds of yards from the coastline so get alot of salt spray here...its almost a given...particularly this time of year to have to spray the windows of a morning to clear it off....it also bakes onto the headlamps so I leave the washers to do their thing otherwise it does affect the light output even on bi-xenons (I have a GTD).

Worst one is the mirrors.....heat them up to clear the moisture most mornings to realise a little way up the road all i have served to do is bake the salt onto them...they are then about as much use as a chocolate fireguard :-)

I also like to keep the car toasty this time of year....running 21/22 degrees on the climate.....doesnt take much for a bit of road film to bake on the screen and need washing with those temps....

They will be either hacked software (with god know what included in the software... it is not unheard of for owners to ‘brick’ their car with hacked software), also if the software is older than the car then it is likely it will not work anyway, or an older ‘dumb’ interface which will not work.

Why don’t you PM a member on here who has a genuine version of VCDS? (list / map of owners with VCDS is in my signature)

I also find dropping back another car length or so from the vehicle in front helps with the amount of times the washers need to be used, ours only tend to ’need’ to be refilled a couple of times per year.

apologies I should have ended with " you guys driving behind a lot of tractors or live by the coast? " Conversely I live in Manchester where it pretty much rains as standard, so maybe I'm at the opposite end of the windscreen washing scale to your good self. I bet you get better sunsets than me though!!

Is bloody horrible down here at the moment my friend...grey, wet and windy....sunsets are cool in the better months though :-)

You can set the time required to pull the stalk before the jets activate with VCDS.

I've set mine to 2000ms (2secs) - that's how long you have to hold the stalk washing the windscreen before the headlight jets activate.

You can also reduce the length of time each of the wash cycles activates for, the defaults are 600ms for the first wash and 1100ms for the second

Why they dont just enable a long pull by default god only knows. Also makes sense Andy that the cycles can be changed....Im guessing my Golf must have much shorter first and second cycles.
