EMERGENCY - DEAD CAR - HELP

Featured Replies

Fabia VRS SE 2007

Just been driving around cannock, came home and stopped and McDonald's.

Come out, car won't start.

Electrics work, car just won't even try to start.

Luckily my brothers girlfreind knew how to bump a car so we pushed it and it bump started.

New battery like a month ago, so not that.

Quick google my brother did whilst we were sitting there said about a starter motor signal cable.

I have an engine management light from EGR delete/Map that comes up as exhaust and when I remove it, appears again shortly after. Tomorrow I'll get my mate to bring me the reader round and see if it picks anything up other than something about exhaust from the EGR/Map but until then, has anyone experienced anything simlar?

Starter wire sounds most likely if its able to get running with a bump

As above regards little wire to solenoid, or maybe braided cable between solenoid and starter....these can corrode and fall to bits/burn out.

More importantly.....

Tell your brother his girlfriend's a keeper!!

Good work from the brothers girlfriend :P

But yeah, my bets on the switched live wire right as it goes into the starter motor so should be easy to spot.

Sometimes if the wire's not wholly broken, wiggling it slightly can get it going for a while. Not something to depend upon though. My previous repair failed 2 years ago in Sainsburys multistory requiring me to spend a freezing Saturday/Sunday fixing it.... Around 23/24 December!

Also worth checking your battery light lights up when you turn the ignition to stage two?

I've had the same thing, the wire to the starter solenoid is very prone to damage as it's just a single wire with a spade connector on the end. I renewed mine quiet a way back and ran it down some shroud for protection.

Once you've got to the starter motor (easiest way is take the battery out), You can test the starter by temporarily reconnecting the battery, turning the key to the second click and running a hotwire from battery +ve to the spade on the solenoid. Make sure the car's in neutral and you don't run the motor on once the engine's started.

There's nothing complex about the wire, it's just a single wire with 12v running down it when you crank, so you can test that ith a multimeter or a test light.

Try not to bump start the car too often though...you might break the cam belt and then you'll need a new engine.

Maybe not the ideal way to start an engine, but when bump starting a car, you tend to get the car moving at a reasonable speed then lift the clutch up quietly while in 3rd gear or whatever suits the speed, that turns the flywheel which turns the engine over, starting using the starter motor does the same!

With a flat battery, when bump starting my 1.4 mpi, the PAS system doesn't work. I've done it once. So other systems might be affected by this maneuver as well.

That would be because of low battery voltage, not because it was bumped though. It's perfectly fine to bump a car
