What does "XX Plates" stands for?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm living in Croatia and it was the first time on Briskoda that I heard (read) "56 plate", "57 plate" Octavia and so on...

Can someone explain me what does it stands for cause I don't have that in my country, we mark them as 2001 Octavia, 2009 Octavia (model years) and so on..

Thanks

Year of first registration

So 2001 started as 51 in September,

2002 was 02 in March and 52 in September

2003 was 03 in March and 53 in September

etc.

Our registration numbers run from March to September, then from September to the following March.

Long answer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_the_United_Kingdom,_Crown_dependencies_and_overseas_territories#Year_identifiers

Short answer:

Our number plates go

letter, letter, number, number, letter letter letter

The first two letters give the area the car was registered in.

The numbers depend the year it was registered in.

The last three letters are more or less random.

the numbers are screwy though, they change every 6 months for the first digit, every 12 months for the second one, there wasn't an 01, because they started the new pattern towards the end of the year, so they went

51, 02, 52, 03, 54, 04, 55, 05, 56, 06, 57, 07, 58, 08, 59, 09

then they added one to the first number

61, 11, 62, 12, 63, 13, 64, 14, 65, 15................

Wooow, didn't know it was that "complex"!

So roughly - 06 plate and 56 plate are MY2006 cars, with newest possible till March 2007.

Thank you guys, resolved all my confusions, now it's much easier to follow the Forum!

You missed out 10! :( (and 60)

Your explanation of 5x and 0x is correct, but you have 6x and 1x the wrong way round. March is the year; 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 etcetera, and September is the year with a prefix;61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 etcetera.

Good point, well made.

My other car's an A-reg, and I like it that way! :)

To make it a little more complicated, a car can have a personalised plate that is older - but never newer than when it was registered.

Yeah, read it on Wikipedia, thanks

I don't quite know how, but you've managed to screw that right up. Best just look at Wiki hey :)

Actually skoda change the model year in about July, so 06 will likely be MY2006 whilst 56 is more likely to be an MY2007. But an 06 could still be MY2007...

But if a car has sat around before being registered it could be older.
