My Dunlops have gone..

Featured Replies

I have just clocked up 29,000 miles. My fronts had reached 3mm and the rears were 4mm so I decided to give my car, and my ears, an early Christmas present. I didn't need to change the rears but decided to anyway.

I now have Goodyear Efficient Grip on all 4 corners. First impression is that they are certainly quieter than the Dunlops.

Hopefully I shouldn't need to change them again before my PCP is up. I will have done about 51,000 miles by then.

Pat

That's what i had on the last two cars and cannot wait to get them changed on the Rapid.

At 35k and still some life on the Dunlops.

wow.. pulling some miles out of them tyres...

The factory Dunlops should be good for between 20-30k depending on driving style and urban/extra urban road mix. I'm at 21k and my fronts are 3.5mm, reads are 4mm.

Bidey and PJR77 are doing very well with theirs.

All 4 being replaced on mine in the new year with either much quieter Barum tyres or some Michelins from Costco.

Sent from my iPhone 6S Plus using Tapatalk, please excuse any typos.

I had the SP SPORT MAXX 17'' They have incredible grip, but busted a tire and here in Chile is super hard to find (skoda, vw or audi, dont have or don't import these tires). So I had to change for the DUNLOP Direzza dz101... 60% much better in curves but no recommended in rain or ice, spring-summer season tires. Aprox price $140USD a piece

My Dunlops look brand new at 9k they certainly wear well and I give them pretty hard use. Downside to these tyres is they make a sound like all 4 wheel bearings need to be replaced.

Yes, yes they do make a terrible racket.

Surprised anybody rates them Sport Maxx at all.

Of all the tyres listed in 215/40R17 on tyrereviews.co.uk they come in 42nd place!

Goodyear Efficient Grip are 43rd!!

17k miles in and I've got 4mm on my front tyres and 5mm on the rears. I was thinking of fitting efficient grip next time but I'm not so sure now.

Did some cars come fitted with different brands of tyre?

The wife's 15s are shod with Continental rubber, not Dunlop.  Just curious since we weren't the first owners (although it had done so few miles when we bought it, I can't see why the first owner would have changed them).

Mine came on Bridgestone Turanzas. They're ok but a bit noisy. I'll be glad if I see 20k miles from them, I used to get 8000 miles out of a pair of 255/35/18s on the back of my old 325ti!

Its a funny one this.. i never rated the SPORT MAXX on my Audi, found them really poor for grip, what is strange is a good lateral grip tyre lasting such high mileage, you tend to find softer compounds equal better grip but less mileage but guess it also comes down the the torque and weight of the car.

(I would be lucky to get 9-10k out of a pair of rears on the E60.)

Mine came with Bridgestones too. They do seem noisy, I've got a long way to go currently, done under 6k miles in 15 months.

They are different tyres mate.

Goodyear Efficient Grip or Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance.(which is about 5 years more modern)

Be careful what you buy.

Equally with Dunlop:

SP Sport Maxx are really poorly rated but the similar

SP Sport Fast Response on my Ibiza are great - grippy and quiet.

No real complaints with the 215/40 R17 Sport Maxx on ours and with switching to winters for 5 months a year, they unlikely to wear out during my ownership. However apart from cornering due to softer rubber and the lack of effective rim protection, the Nokian WR A3 winters are the better of the two tyres I'm running, even in the unseasonally mild weather we have currently.

Those winters get 92% overall on tyre reviews :)

No 215/40R17 reviews at more than 89%

Sport Maxx score 66% :(

Which tyres would offer a quieter ride and better rim protection? Our sport has the dunlops and I hate them....

Very subjective question, particularly as the Dunlop statistical is one of the quieter tyres. You could look at the RT version of the Sport Maxx, as its got a better rating, or the lesser known brands such as Barum are often a good choice, as are Uniroyal and Nokian.

Oh the Goodyear Eagle is supposed to be the quietest tyre out there; again statistical.

My problem with the Dunlop Sport Maxxes is that seeds of the olive tree (common here) are constantly getting stuck on them. I always have more than 10 stuck in any given wheel, and I do remove them when I see them. Very annoying!

Best avoid the Michelin Cross Climate we have on or V40 then; more groves than you can shake a stick at but very good all weather tyres.
