Skoda Drive app now supports WiFi Direct

Featured Replies

As per thread title, got an update today and it now connects via WiFi Direct on Android.

Nice!

For me the app tells: Your device isn't compatible with this version. I have LG Nexus 5X, Simply Clever!

They forgot to check android M in play store.

Where does android put the installer files when you download from the PlayStore - I'll see if I can pull the APK from my phone

Thanks andyvee.

Downloaded and installed. Seems to work, testing with the car later on.

Cool - glad it worked :)

I'm getting fairly good results with the WiFi Direct support Drive App and Android. However, I do get random disconnects between my phone and the module. Below few questions to everybody:

- Do you guys get the disconnects between the module and phone?

- Also, have you lowered the transmit power of the Smartgate module's WiFi adapter?

- Are you getting refueling dialogs? I tested a refuel today and I didn't get the dialog. I have entered the fuel prices etc info under profile.

Using SGS 5 phone.

EDIT: my usual bad habit: typos

Had the occasional disconnect, but it seems to be when my phone is in range of a known wireless network (which includes BT Hotspots)

Lowered the transmit power to 5%

Refuel dialogs work, but I always skip them as it asks for number of gallons and price per gallon. Seeing as I have just filled up in litres I can't be bothered trying to multiply or divide by 4.56 whilst sat at the petrol pump

Do those using WiFi direct on an android phone find that you get 3 notification icons when connected? 2 the same time with car and WiFi signals coming our of it and another with "direct" in word?

Nope, I get one for the SmartGate app and one for the drive app, that is it.

The other ones you are getting are probably from the Service app, I've uninstalled that as I can't see the purpose of it now firmware upgrades can be done via the SmartGate app.

Cool, I also get a "please disconnect phone from WiFi network" car icon when I am in my WiFi network at home. (and the car is outside switched off) anyone?

I get that, just ignore it. Annoying though.

Hi,

thanks for your info. Doesn't your Drive App support imperial units as well? I seem to remember mine does. I lifted my transmit to 25% for a while to see if the disconnects stop.

It does, everything in miles and gallons. BUT we fuel up in litres ....

Drive doesn't work on mirror link while in motion though.... (even though it is a mirror link app, rather pointless)

We do fuel in litres as well and on my Drive App I have selected imperial and diesel per litre price. Did I read you right or do you drive in miles, consume in miles and refuel in lites? Just checking what's the whole picture.

Hi, I can use Drive fine via MirrorLink using S5 Samsung. Works fine including the motion. I can even control the app via Columbus when driving. One negative thing is that if the connection to the SmartGate module cuts off, the app doesn't have a quick reconnect button.

That is correct in the UK. We use imperial and metric.

Fuel used to be sold by the gallon before we went to the metric system.....though miles dis not change. Just to make life that little bit interesting!!

I made in the UK and it says that the app has been disabled for my region. I take it you are not in the UK?

Heh, this is a very simple way of handling things. =D

Hi, I'm from Finland and running S5 international / nordic model with no service provider custom firmware images / restrictions. Here are the App versions:

- Skoda Smartgate App 1.1.37 (checked from phone)

- Skoda Drive 1.9.6 (checked from phone)

- Skoda Service 3.2.2 (checked from Play Store)

- S5 firmware

  • Kies: PDA:OK5 / CSC:OK1 / PHONE:OJ1
  • About Device: Build Number LRX21T.G900FXXU1POK5

- Smartgate module currently running on 25% transmit power and the firmware is WiFi direct flavored 1023.

- Just to cover as much detail I can, I usually connect the phone via Smartgate App to Smartgate module, then fire up Skoda Service and connect the phone via USB to the car and start the Skoda Drive App via Mirrorlink.

PS. Stumbled a few days ago to the fact that Samsung is allowing Android Auto on the phone providers AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. If this is testable over in UK, I'd be really interested to hear how things turned out. I have not been satisfied with Samsung Car Mode. Android auto is not exactly Skoda Drive but maybe there are some similar Apps coming along soonish.

By the way, I'm building a Tasker automation script to my Android. It's not final yet, but if I manage to get something easy to use and reliable together, I can share the Tasker profile. Currently I'm scanning if the Smartgate WLAN is near, the phone disconnects from my home network if it's connected to it and then starts up the Skoda Apps. 2nd task is vice versa - once the Smartgate module WLAN goes offline (=car powered off), the task starts to kill the Skoda Apps.
