MOT miles carry over

Featured Replies

Just had the second MOT on my car and, as usual on my previous car, put it in early and expected the date of expiry of the new MOT would have same date as the last one plus one year.

The garage said they printed out the MOT certificate from the DVLA on line system but it show a Jan 16 expiry date on their screen and the test date as the expiry date (in Dec 15) on the paper copy. (The on-line check also shows the wrong date).

After a lot of questioning I eventually found a very helpful young lady at the DVLA who had the answer.

She said:

"The DVLA has introduced a new computer system which is throwing up a number of issues nationwide, including the issue I raised. Ongoing work to fix the problem will take two months. Those people who have reported the missing MOT date extension will be issued with a new correct MOT in about 10 weeks time."

She then took my details so that I could be kept informed.

She further added that the issue is mainly on cars that have or had a private number plate at some time. (In my case the previous driver removed his before selling the car.

So check the expiry date on your new MOT and call the DVLA if there is no carry over.

Maybe re-post this in a few months time to give the DVLA time to sort out their problems.

Then give our guys a reminder.

The DVLA have been saying this since the new system came in some months ago. Back then they said it will take two months to fix and here we are several months down the road with it still needing two months.

I work in IT, it shouldn't take to much to get a developer to fix this bug given that the longer it goes on the more MOT's they are going to have to re-issue.

The DVLA do not give a stuff, do they.

They are getting paid and kept in work, whilst the money comes from the taxpayers.

They have nothing to lose. Not even their (our) faith, as that went down the river with Moses, Lol.

That sounds a lot like common sense to me, the DVSA don't seem to do that too well.  The testers have had no formal training or instruction on how to use the system and they've suspended all the refresher training.  Post dating of certificates has been automatic since computerisation in 2005, the testers have no control over it.

It was a nightmare when we first switched over to it, we were had writing the MOTs on photocopied certificates.

I had this exact problem when i MOT'd my car in early October. I had a private plate (did have for 2 years on the car) and after the MOT it never carried over. The garage said they can't do anything and i emailed the DVLA and i got a new MOT certificate sent out around 3 weeks later and was all sorted for online checks etc.

It probably turns out that some part of the computer system dates from the 80s or earlier and the key bit is all written in Cobol or something even more arcane and it's causing big problems.
