Mileage on an Octavia! An issue? HELP!

IMHO 100k miles is a looooooooooong way even for a diesel, and as you mentioned nobody gets a company VRS and then poodles around at 3000 revs. So they've done high mileage and probably been driven hard. But if all you can afford is

I dont see 100k being to bad really, Jon IIRC clocked up well over that in his old one. His old one was also remapped to hhhmmm BHP almost from new. The engine also did more than 12K in track miles on the nurburgring.

Modern engines are much better than old ones, in recent years I have been running a commuter car, with a fun car for the weekend. My current 1997 Mondeo 2.0 Auto is just coming upto 150k miles, and is still on its original engine including starter etc. and the gearbox is also original. My previous L reg one I sold on with 133K on the clock.

My 1.8T has clocked over 80k miles with no major problems what so ever. Its bee remapped and driven hard for the last 15k miles too.

I assume this "chap" who can get the cars is buying from a trade auction? If this is the case why not ask him to look at non-VRS octavias too? You could pick up a lower mileage Elegance or L&K spec vehicle for the same money with less miles. These can be remapped to the same level as the VRS and insurance on a modified Elegance was, for me, cheaper than a standard VRS.

As to wether or not the price is right I cant really comment but on the mileage worries I think I can -

100,000 miles to a modern car is absoloutely nothing, it's still young with plenty of life left at that stage, there are nearly 130 cars on our fleet of taxis, some were purchased new and some second hand, we have bought cars from private sellers to bring into the trade with in excess of 100,000 miles on before they are to be turned into taxis, and with most of them covering over 80,000 miles a year you have to be sure a car will be reliable, we generally have no problems with the higher milage vehicles at all, other than tired shocks/bushes etc but that is only to be expected when carrying 4 passengers all day in town driving!!

We dont consider replacing a car due to mileage related unreliability untill they have half a million miles on them  yep, you heard that right! most of our cars are now Skodas with the majority being Octavia SDi's and Superb Tdi's but we do have quite a few petrol Octavias and a couple of VRS's to boot.

One of the Vrs's has now covered 320,000 miles and is still going strong, I gaurantee you could not tell the difference between it and a 50,000 mile example, you must of course maintain the vehicle properly and if done so a supposedly high mileage example at 100,000 will give you years of good service!!

We dont drive the cars wearing mittens either!! I can assure you most of them get a proper spanking nearly every night when the roads are quiet!! I guess the key is maintainence really, look after it and all should be good!!

Oh and that 320,000 VRS - still on original Turbo, engine & gearbox

A loan car (1986 VW Passat - 2.0l GT) that I had a couple of times from my local specialist had done 290,000 miles, and apart from sounding like a set of old bed springs, it still went pretty well. These engines really do last if you keep them maintained.

Diesel enginesare generally long lived if they are maintained properly. Hard driving is not always a bad thing. A high mileage car will have probably spent most of those miles at operating temperature, not used to pop half a mile down the road for a paper an back on a cold engine.

The wear on the ancillary systems is more of an issue. You would want to be sure that all steering. suspension and brake components were in good order.

I sold my RS Feb '03 with 140k on the clock for £5,500 so I'd say the price was about right. As for the mileage, no bad effects although the seats wre a bit grubby after 2 years of use :( As Manny said, mine had a very hard life!

My current one has just clicked over 90k, running sweet as :D

John - are the taxis running fixed or variable servicing?

Some of the Superbs are on variable servicing, but nearly all the cars are on fixed (10k) services, were trialling the variable on the Superbs to see how it affects longevity and servicing costs, as although you obviously have less services, they are more expensive!!

Great post, just what i was looking for!

Would anyone say that 5-6k is a good price for an 02/03 reg 100k'er? With the service etc?..
