Windscreen wipers....

Featured Replies

Yesterday I (me and the Fab, that is) served as a support vehicle at an 18 hour 340 km bicycle race conducted under the worst possible circumstances. Snow, sludge and salty moist at temperatures raising from -3ºC at 6 am to +2ºC at about midnight.

The wipers couldnt under any circumstances be held free of melting snow turning into ice, building up solid iceballs at the size of walnuts, of course resulting in a very poor sight. Neither was it possible to clean the wipers in a proper way without opening the bonnet. Being quite used to the circumstances Ive never had a car with wipers behaving like that.

There should be openings for some warm air leaking from the engine underneat the wipers and foremost, the wiper arms really shall be able to be raised without opening the hood! This is an insane construction flaw. Theyve got snow and ice in Czeckia wintertime aswell, for some gods sake!

You can put wipers in service mode when you want to clean it.

I totally agree with pfaff, it is very poor design not to be able to raise the wiper arms without doing anything special. I like to raise the arms in the winter to prevent the wipers from freezing to the screen, but if I have to move the wipers each time they will unnecessarily scratch the windscreen and wear out. This is really the one thing about the Fabia III I do not like at all, otherwise I am very happy with the car

Unfortunately this "feature" is on all the cars that use this platform, started with the Seat Ibiza in 2008/9, followed by Polo later and now Fabia. It has been said that it is to reduce aerodynamic drag and on some cars, to improve the look of the car.

As you have said, until we are all really used to using the service position function, we will end up getting a bit annoyed when we want to lift the wipers up to clean/clear below them.

This might just be progress gone mad, or change for changes sake, ie "we can provide a service position to allow the wipers to be raised - so we will just design the wipers to need/us this extra function now that it is available".

Other VAG cars also have this feature as, I'd guess do many other cars from other manufacturers.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but could someone please tell me which wipers fit the Fabia III?

The ones that came with our car are not great and we wanted to replace them with Bosch as we've been happy in the past. I found this reference number,  but I can't seem to source any locally or even online.

AeroTwin A 138 S

I've already returned a Bosch multi-clip set that didn't fit. Any info would be appreciated. Even other brand recommendations are welcome :)

Thanks.

Thanks for the link . Have only had to deice the windscreen once so far this year but freeing the wiper blade is a bit of a stretch on the drivers side. The blades were frozen to the screen not the easiest system to remove the ice from the blades before putting them in the park position and folding them away from the screen Joe

If your car is in warranty ask a Skoda dealer for a new pair of wipers.

Why should the Dealership or Skoda replace wipers under a Warranty,  or actually are they faulty wiper blades that Skoda are sourcing ?

Maybe the windscreen or the wiper blades need a good clean.

My dealer replaced mine under warranty. They were smearing. Car is on 3 months old.

I think they will do it up to 1 year.

It would be interesting to know if the Dealership submitted a Warranty Claim because wipers were smearing and Skoda paid,

or if a good Dealership replaced them as a goodwill gesture and they covered the cost of the parts.

?

Has anyone else had a Dealership prepared to replace Wiper Blades under Warranty on a 2015 Fabia?

Does anyone have experience of the wiper blades being poor and of substandard materials?

Maybe useful information to other members if they have issues and need to talk to a Workshop Manager or the Service Desk.

My feeling is, especially the drivers side wiper blade, seems very flimsy and appears longer than other wiper blades I have replaced on the drivers side over the years on different cars.

I am sure there is another thread on this site about a member who had problems with the gadget that locks the wiper blade to the wiper arm I will see if I can find it Joe

I found it Search under "help finding a small part"

I find using a good quality rain repellant on the windscreen can help lessen the blades freezing to the screen though not totally eliminate it. Certainly helps prevent smearing.

Mind you us Southerners in the UK rarely experience the low temperatures of our European cousins ;-)

Seems like you guys take your share of the wet instead...;)

The day after I also found the windscreen to be cracked lower left. I cannot find any stone chips at the crack so I suppose a mix of tensions, removing ice and whatelse did it.

At new year I got another crack at the right side of the screen, caused by a stone, though.

New screen will be replaced by insurance, but I think it will have to wait until spring....

We certainly do at the moment...........especially those up North in Cumbria etc!

I just have to agree with Pfaff! Living in Iceland this is a big problem in the winter, getting the snow out from under the bonnet and carefully lifting the wipers without chipping the paint on the bonnet... Do you know if there is an option of a heated front windscreen like the eGolf is equipped with? Or perhaps a heated thread where the wipers rest....

VAG like to bury the wipers & raise the bonnet for aero..........so you get service position function...........

as for wiper quality just google Golf MK7 wiper problems...............

However what most people DO NOT realise is that the glass screens are flawed at a microscopic level with rough patches which cause the blades to smear/judder, you have to use a glass cutting compound like jewellers rouge, the best & easiest is to get this stuff:-

This cuts the glass rough/high patches & makes it so smooth dirt has a difficult time sticking to the glass.

I had major problems & had tried EVERY known solution (clay bar, AG glass polish, meths, vinegar, quart ceramic coatings, Bosch aero wiper, etc), all failed until I tried the above stuff..............

Also I found out that big aero wipers are apparently known for "problems" & Bosch have recently modified there Aero wipers but the parts are the same numbers, however look for black & white boxes. These wipers have a bigger reinforced centre section which is stiffer.......

I have also come to the conclusion that these long Bosch Aero wipers are not doing the job they were designed initially for, properly, good to know that that issue is being addressed though.
