What to do with oil consumption?

Featured Replies

I've had my car now around 6 months and it is definitely using oil with no visible leaks, so I presume its the issue many are talking about on here. So far I have done nothing about it apart from top up when needed and repeat. I'm going through around a litre of oil per 500 miles, which is excessive in my eyes.

The car is a 2011 Fabia vRS and is no longer under manufacturers warranty but is covered by a RAC warranty.

Any suggestions what my first steps should be? If I'm covered under warranty?

Thanks

First thing to do is to not panic.

I would contact the warranty company and explain that the car is using excessive oil.

Being the RAC, they should hopefully see that 500 miles to a litre of oil is something to look into!

If it is using that much, you'll probably need a new engine.

Got any more info on your car? Colour? Estate or hatch?

61 plate hatch white bought from the car people in Manchester, fsh and not recorded in the book as using excessive oil or any other problems, completely standard car

Ok good, so it's not been mapped (to your knowledge)

Contact the RAC and explain the situation, as it will need to be looked at by Skoda and no doubt need to go through an oil consumption test.

Luckily, there are members on here that have gone through the process and will no doubt lend their advice.

Read THIS THREAD and if you are using one litre per 500 miles, you have a problem.

Is your "RAC warranty" a warranty or recovery?

I believe that you can get complete details of any work carried out on your car by a Skoda dealer from Skoda UK - George will be along soon to tell you how.

Its an RAC Warranty provided on purchase from The Car People, and ill have a read now, thanks

Read the warranty VERY carefully, looking particularly for any mention of the engine and/or "known faults".

Good luck and I hope you have a Happy 2016 :)

First thing really is check the Skoda System to see the known history. Service and Warranty. To see if the car had any Warranty actions already. Software update. Engine rebuild. Breather pipe valve update or new replacement engine or Oil spray jets. Then fron there you have some idea what you have.

How do I check the skoda system? Thanks

If the car has had the work previously that VW commonly carry out then the car was as it should be. So the known issues really are not an issue for the Warranty company, Skoda are supposed to have rectified the issues. A service history will be important.

Call Skoda Uk customer services and ask them to supply the records on the system. A Customer Services manager can get you this. Or a Service desk at a Main Dealership.

How many miles has the car done?

Car has done 44k  had done 38k when I bought it, since I have had its had a full service by a vag specialist and the plugs changed.

Good, that should satisfy the Warranty Provider. Now you need to speak with them, probably they will say you have to pay for the diagnosis, so the Oil Consumption test and report. But as part of the claim after work is approved this should be reimbursed when the claim is settled. Good luck.

I've spoke to the warranty department and they are saying I can take to any VAT registered garage to inspect the vehicle for a problem. I'm thinking it would be better to go to the main dealer? Or would it not matter?

I'd book it into a Skoda dealer.

It will need to be a VWG specialist I would think because it will be simple to follow the Official oil consumption test. Plus they will fit the new engine. £4,000 It is about to cost the Warranty Provider. No point stripping, rebuilding, oil spray jets Etc. But they will want to try that.

Well after various phone calls its going into the main dealer on the 8th Jan for an inspection and possibly a consumption test as long as no leaks are found to be the problem they said.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the help.

What have you discussed with the Skoda Dealership about cost.

If they do a Oil Consumption Test it is an Oil & Filter Change, Oil then dropped and weighed & you drive 300km(186 miles)

or better still 1000 km (621 miles),

Then they drop the Oil and weigh it and the difference in weight is the usage.

(1 litre is 857 grams.)

So 3.6 litres of oil, Oil filter and Sump Plug, but some charge £130 or more to do this.

It can be done cheaper where the Technician checks the oil level, tops it up to where he/she thinks the correct level is.

Seals the Filler Cap & Dip stick and then you drive it, until the warning light comes on or 1,242 miles sort of distance if it goes

that far without a Warning Light or Message.

I think the Warranty Provider will be after the proper Oil Consumption Test, as there is no other way to know

if it is using Oil because an Oil Leak is highly unlikely without you already seeing one.

This is the Type of thing,

but this one has a glaring error.

The warranty provider has authorised 1 hour of labour up front for diagnosis plus parts and any difference made up by me then claimed back after fault found so not too bad.
